In 2001 I bought a mare from a OLD man who is now dead....I think this falls under information seekers, please look there and read my post about DNA not matching.
I need suggestions!

Gosh, I know this story firsthand! That's how I got involved in thoroughbreds and breeding!

My first TB was an big gangly gelding with quite a backstory, according to the farm where I got him. He came off the track with a goat (which apparently he hated - it only had one eye), a famous owner, and just was the most gorgeous horse I had ever seen. Big and dark, I overlooked the horrible knees and thin poor condition and begged for him. The lady who had him sold him to me for a song and I then tried to get his papers.... ah, youth!

We knew his name, so I tried that and was told that horse was dead! I told them I was looking out in the pasture and that I could assure them he was quite alive. I tried for months to find out anything, but eventually was told to enjoy the horse that I had and stop trying to figure out who he was.

So, my dead TB and I had years of fun and he was the one who got me involved in breeding and my pedigree craze.

If your colt isn't going to be used to breeding purposes, geld him and know that he is your old friend's legacy to you. I know, not ideal but workable.

Yep, been there, done that. We bought a mare from a gal who had bought her off of a killer truck 10+ years before. The gal had a friend who worked in tattoo research so she gave the friend the tattoo number, friend looked up horse... dark bay mare, right age, etc. The gal showed the mare h/j so never cared about getting the registration papers. Mare did great, won all sorts of ribbons, etc. The mare ended up getting lymphangitis but it was manageable, so the gal bred her to a draft stallion for a sport horse foal that she could raise, show, compete with... again no need for registration papers. Then, she put the mare up for sale. We saw the ad, looked up the mare, who was blacktype and had breeding that we liked, so we decided to purchase her. Since we knew who she was we figured it would be easy enough to get duplicate papers.

So, we drive all the way to New York, load mare in trailer, drive back to Indiana, take mare to be bred, she gets in foal. Meanwhile, we look up the breeders of the mare and call them, just in case they had kept a copy of her papers (since really a copy was all we technically needed for our statebred program.) Breeder informed us that the mare was dead. We said no, she was saved off the killer truck years ago, we recently bought her... breeder said no, she was WITH the mare when she died... mare was definitely dead. YIKES!

We contacted the previous owner, who was mortified to find out that the mare she'd had for so long was not the mare she thought it was. After talking to the JC, we determined there were 5 mares that matched the portion of the tattoo that we could read and were the correct age and color and had not had any registered TB offspring. We started going through them one by one; gathered up the bill of sale, note from previous owner, made a signboard, took the pictures, recorded the markings/cowlicks, sent everything in with payment, and they pulled the info... not the right mare. We did it for the second... no luck. On the third, we got a hit. It took a ton of time and effort, not only on our part but also by the JC and the previous owner, but in the end we did get duplicate papers and did register her foal.

As far as suggestions, I can say that the JC was very helpful and busted their rear ends to help me. My suggestion is to call them and explain what's going on... hopefully they can help you like the helped me. Good luck!
