I found this ad on a website. They have listed a 5 y/o unnbroke Mare as a great racing prospect and will only sell to a racing farm in NY.

I don't know anything about racing I really don't but I'm thinking 5 years old is kinda late to start racing.
What's your opinion??

Wow.
Even if you started her now, you'd be lucky to get her to a race by the end of the year. A lot of states (I'm not sure about NY) won't let maiden older than 5 start. So, you'd be under the gun a bit.
My guess is these people are wanting to get NY breeder's awards. I think that is a dream.
By the time you spent the money to get this horse broke, you could either buy one already going or claim one. And you wouldn't have to worry about the maiden restriction thing.
At quick glance there is nothing in her pedigree to recommend her, either.
If these sellers get any takers on this, they should sell the mailing list.

Looking at her female family production record, IMHO she is not broodie material for a race foal.
The 2000 foal out of Nurjan was unraced. The 2nd foal raced 11 times and earned $2400 with a single 2nd place finish, no wins or thirds. Nurjan slipped twins in 2002 then foaled this gal in 2003.
Nurjan herself is a half sibling to 7 other horses. None of them are black type. The '84 foal raced once earning $0. The '85 by Conquistador Cielo was much better, with 8 starts, 5 wins, arguably the best foal out of the mare. The '86 foal by Nureyev (hubba hubba) raced 23 times with just 1 win, 3 seconds, 3 thirds but very low earnings (usually a sign of cheap tracks). The '88 by Nijinsky 2 raced 4 times, with 2 wins & a third in the UK - interestingly enough his average winning distance was a touch over a mile and a quarter. The '91 foal by Procida was unraced. Next we have Nurjan herself - by Seattle Song, with 25 starts 4 wins 4 seconds 3 thirds, just under $15k earnings (again, must have run at a cheap track). The '93 foal by Transworld was a bit sturdier with 38 starts, 3 wins, 5 seconds and 1 third, with earnings just under $28k. And the final foal, by Cyrano had 32 starts with 2 wins, 3 seconds, 3 thirds, earnings of ~$15k, again denoting racing at a cheap track.
One thing that stands out to me is the big change in the quality of stallions that Kuja Happa was bred to. Started out with some NICE stallions and ended up being bred to just so-so stallions.
If you end up pursuing this, definitely find out how old a maiden can run in NY - many states don't allow any horse older than 5 yo to race in a maiden race. I just checked the NYRA site and the conditions in claiming races appear to be "For 3 yo's and up" which would mean she is eligible to race in NY even if she isnt ready by the end of the year. http://www.equibase.com/premium/eqbHors ... -20080720D
