The next 85 point prep race is the 1 1/8th mile Spiral Stakes this Saturday, a GR III over synthetic at Turfway Park. Under normal circumstances I wouldn't bother looking at a Derby prep run over synthetic, but if these possible's and versatile runner's end up in this race, it will be a key prep for some legitimate Derby candidates. Here's an advance look at some that could very well enter in The Spiral Stakes come this Wednesday.
Balance The Books, who has only raced on turf so far, has every right to like this synthetic surface. Also no reason for him not to handle dirt being by Lemon Drop Kid out of a Seeking the Gold mare. Interesting horse and deserving of close scrutiny here.
My Name is Michael, a Billy Mott trainee.....is certainly worth a look. He came from the all weather tracks at Woodbine and ran well his only try on the dirt at Tampa. He is working lights out at Payson and deserves a lot of respect here.
Uncaptured, probably Mark Casse' best chance to win a Derby so far, should be in the thick of this. He is returning off a nagging hoof problem and he's working as if that's behind him. He's a real contender if he makes it to the starting gate.
Fear The Kitten, Mike Maker's and Ramsey's hope who has won on the all weather track and finished in the money in his last two GR III races on the dirt will try to make his presence felt.
Other possibles are Capo Bastone, Black Onyx, General Election, Channel Isle and Mac the Man. TJ
Next Up, The Spiral
