Thought I'd Post My Heavy Rabicano Filly Here

Postby teb » Sat Aug 08, 2009 11:32 am

Hi All,

I haven't posted here in ages and just discovered this Color Corner section so I thought I'd post my TB filly by High Chaparral. When she was born she had just a couple of white hairs on her wither. When she started shedding I called the DNA lab to make sure my filly was by who she was supposed to be by.

Thanks for posting this interesting case Teb.
Can you share the pedigree of her immediate parents?
Welcome again.....hmmm with a very nice case. The chestnut equine behind our subject case in the second photo looks nice too. Great!

I also did mean to point out, she actually isn't so "yakky" in person. She's going to be a tall lady and is going through some funky growth spurts. Plus some cows moved in next to her that day and she was all spooked out!

Her pedigree is High Chaparral out of Annia Faustina by Docksider. Annia is a 3/4 sister to Catumbella who bred Honor In War. Same family as Munnings too. High Chap has the rabicano gene with a few white hairs on his body and the skunk tail. Mom has a few white hairs on her body but in a weird place. They are on her side just below middle of the rib cage. They descend in a straight line down her side. She does not have a skunk tail.

Hi Terri! Glad you found your way back over here ... :)

She looks so swanlike and elegant now - she is going to be a stunning girl once she grows into herself!

Jorge I'm sure will give you some wonderful insight on the pedigree aspect of her colouring once he comes back on the board - we all defer to him when we scratch our heads and wonder where it is all coming from! :)

My most rabicano mare of all was this girl:

Image - her name was Higate Beau Affair and she had some *interesting* inbreeding going on there ...

This girl is also quite interesting - Contrary Rose:

and Showmethemoolah is one of my favorite rabicano's!

I also forgot, this girl also has a belly spot smack dab in the middle just behind the forearm, but it then has a stripe that runs all the way back to her udder. Obviously, it's a tad tricky to get a picture of this formation!

Donna, would she pass on her Rabicano genes on her own or would she always have to be crossed with a Rabicano stallion? Think I have to move back to the States so I can cross GG on her and see what color and patterns she throws up! :D

She does look similiar to my mare, Saved. When bred to Puchilingui (DW) she produced an all white filly and then an all bay filly with no rabicano. When bred to Chet DT, she produced a "stained white" colt. :)

Is this the filly some people told you was going gray (when that's not possible)?

She doesn't have a skunk tail!? One of the requirements of rabicano is a skunk tail. Typically when a rabicano is this loud there is a very apparent white tail head. Are you sure?

Does she have any white immediately under each forearm (not counting the belly spot)?

Yes, she does have a skunk tail and yes under her forearms are quite roany too. She will be up in the pen today as they were just weaned so will get some more pics this morning. The skunk tail is very minor though. I'll get more pics and you can see what you think.

She has white hairs pretty much everywhere except her head and legs.

Terri - I dont thnk anyone has done any studies that I am aware of that consistently cross rabicano's to each other to see what percentage rabicano they then produce as a result so cant help you on that one! :)

Here is another heavy rabicano I was looking at buying years ago - Dancin Doe:

She would have been interesting to see once her winter coat shed out as well ... :)

Oh I meant to mention that. Every bit of evidence I've seen at this point indicated rabicano is a simple dominant. 50% passage for the heterozygote and 100% for the homozygote.

I weaned 2 days ago and yesterday Penelope was in no mood for video's or pictures!!! My very mild mannered, very good mannered filly decided she would take her agression out on me by telling me she had never been taught any manners ever! The good news is I had a really good view of her belly spot with stripe!

Tried doing a video today as she's back to normal and the video ran out of juice so will be trying tomorrow.

Her skunk tail is very minor - nothing like the other horses shown above and her roaning is all over. Under her throat, all along her neck, just everywhere with the heaviest being rib cage and flank area also on top of her butt.

The video should show more details and give you more of a clue.
