Dilute color question ...

hey guys,

just wondered if anyone might know the answer to this... if you bred a chestnut mare (who has two Palomino parents) to a buckskin stallion, what could you potentially get? I tried to figure it out with the color calculator but ended up confusing myself

The color calculator I use said

Offspring Color Probability

29.17% - Buckskin
29.17% - Bay
16.67% - Palomino
16.67% - Chestnut
4.17% - Smoky Black
4.17% - Black

The two Palomino parents do not play any role if the outcome offspring was a chestnut. You just have a chestnut x buckskin to the account then.

Now in addition it will depend the genetics of the buckskin with what you can count.

If the buckskin is a regular buckskin --bay with one cream gene, then the odd are 50/50 that the foal will get the cream dilute. After that the base coat would be the same for breeding a bay to a chestnut.

More information about what kind of bay --does the bay horse carry the gene for red or does the bay have a black parent would help in the calculations.

Pretty much the colors would be: With the dilute gene, buckskin, palomino and smokey black. Without the cream gene bay, chestnut or black.
