Strange color

Postby docjocoy » Sat Sep 27, 2008 9:39 am

One of my weanlings, who will be a very dark bay, has no white on him anywhere, but I noticed last week that he is getting what looks like a gray stocking on his right hind. I thought at first it was just dirt, but it isn't, it's gray. It's about six inches high now, up from his hoof.
Will it get lighter, stay the same, go away? Just curious because I've not seen anything quite like it before.

Most of those shed out by the time they are yearlings but it could be a roaned stocking/area. Time will tell! :D

Docjocoy,

Let's see what emerges with his shedding. We all like photos!
Thanks for the messages

I'll take some pictures. I think he's done shedding his baby-fur. A "roaned stocking" would be fun!

This is a picture of my yearling with the "roan sock." We had to redo his registration papers because the gal at the farm who wrote up the application missed the white hairs. In the sunlight it is kind of hard to see, but I think it is very cool. He is very dark otherwise, no white at all.

Your description is interesting and certainly deserves a full-body photo of the equine for a better evaluation.

I call those a slow roaned crop-out. Once the young horse developes the white hairs or roaned sock, it will always be there from now on. It could get more white which is so neat. It's a "wanna be" LOL

None of the full body shots shows his sock, but here he is. He also has a few scattered hairs on his forehead that appears to be a "phantom star."

Perfect Circle, a stallion owned by Karie, has a roan sock.

My 2008 filly by him showed roaning on her barrel over the winter, but it's gone now.

My mare (seal brown) has a roaned coronet and a roaned star. The star sort of looks like the hair is circling the drain!
