There are other brindle TBs, but none as bold and obvious as Catch A Bird. The TB stallion Slew City Slew has some brindling and has sired a few with it, including the partial brindle mare Slewcy's Gale.

Would really like to know the name of every brindle or quasi-brindle Thoroughbred said breed has produced. I only have the names and pedigrees of Catch A Bird and the Slew City Slew filly. The other cases aforementioned didn't come with their name(s) or pedigree(s).

I am working on my website-it is down right now. When I get it back up and running I will post it. I have a few buckskins, palominos, sabinos and a white tb. More of a private breeder then anything. Expecting 3 foals in 2010 and have 3 stallions- 1 bucksin, 1 white and 1 palomino.

ps. Please ALL coloured TB stallion ownersI hope you are watching this with as much interest as we are!

Tuesday, 17 November 2009: A Federal Court action that threatens to change world thoroughbred breeding standards by challenging the ban on artificial insemination begins in Sydney today.

Bruce McHugh, a former leading Sydney bookmaker and chairman of the Sydney Turf Club who retains extensive breeding interests, has launched the action that threatens to overturn the staunch stand of governing traditionalists opposed to the use of artificial insemination.

McHugh says thoroughbred breeding is the only commercial animal industry in the world that does not allow artificial insemination.

He is taking the issue to the Federal Court claiming the AI ban is a restraint of trade under the Trade Practices Act. If successful the ramifications will be felt worldwide as it will set the precedent for challenges to existing AI restrictions in every racing nation.

McHugh has declined to comment until the case is heard in the Federal Court but numerous industry leaders have been outspoken in their criticism of his legal action.

Peter McGauran a former Federal agriculture minister and now chief executive of Thoroughbred Breeders Australia, says McHugh is “setting a time bomb” for the breeding industry.

"Every other major breeding country and racing, for that matter, around the world, to which Australia exports more than 2500 horses for in excess of $100 million, will exclude from those markets any horse that is conceived by way of artificial insemination and possibly even those conceived by way of natural serve," McGauran told the ABC.

"Artificial insemination for horses is largely overstated.

“The supposed benefits are scientifically unproven and also we worry enormously, apart from the destruction of the global marketplace, that there will be a narrowing of the genetic pool in that the major stallions will be able to serve a great many more horses than they do at present by way of artificial insemination.

"And it is the small stallion owners, the small breeders or even the middle commercial operators who have most to lose in this, not the big boys."

McGauran denied artificial insemination could open up opportunities for smaller breeders by allowing them to secure specimens from leading international sires they would normally not have access to and without the expense of transporting their mares.

"I don't believe so and the scientific evidence to date is that more than half of horse sperm does not freeze," he said.

"You are still going to have to shuttle a great many Northern Hemisphere stallions if you want to remain part of the global market place, which Australia must.

"We are the second largest breeding industry in the world after the United States.

“We breed so many yearlings and race horses that we must export them if we are to give our 9500 breeders a chance at being commercial."

The rules governing thoroughbred breeding in Australia are controlled by the Australiajn Racing Board and the Australian Stud Book - a ledger of lineage managed by the Australian Jockey Club and the Victoria Racing Club.

The Stud Book, first produced in 1878, accepts only horses conceived by natural means and by consequence their eligibility to race and breed.

The Australian Stud Book rules state that for eligibility “no horse which has been produced as any form of AI is eligible for entry in the Stud Book or the non- Thoroughbred register.”

The International Stud Book committee is controlled by England, France and North America and all three member states are opposed to artificial insemination.
