gray color question

Postby docjocoy » Thu Apr 16, 2009 4:34 pm

My dark bay mare just foaled a filly by a gray sire. The farm manager called and told me I have a lovely dark bay filly. I went to see my new 2 day old filly, and indeed she is lovely. But what struck me was the black on her legs did not have that kind of blondie colored baby-fur that most baby bays have. She has jet black legs with a bit of white mixed in. Her legs look like my other little foal who is very dark and is definitely going to be gray--lots of white hairs on her face. The little bay has no white hairs on her face yet. I guess what I'm wondering is if any of her markings might indicate a gray, or if I will get to have a bay and keep the considerable bling that I finally got on this foal.

If her legs are dark black instead of the normal color of a bay foals legs IMO its a good sign she is going to go gray.

Most of the time if they are going to go gray they are born their "adult color" so to say. If they arent going to gray the will be the normal mousey foal color.

Thanks, Riddle. I had a feeling those legs were saying "I'm a gray!"

My vote is that you have a gray.

Apparently the gray gene works by increasing melanin production. This in effect burns causes more pigment to be produced, then the cell burns out, and looks white. Look for white goggles around her eyes as a sign.

Yes I also love the grays and this one certainly will be fun to document since at this particular moment in time she doesn't look like other gray babies I've seen. I can't do anything about posting pics until I get home to my computer next week.
Its kind of ironic really that I've had 6 foals over the years and not one with any significant white markings. Plain bay, plain chestnut, no grays, no bling on their legs. And one of the mares is gray. So this year I get 2 grays and each has a cute blaze and white stockings.

The eyes and face are where we looked first, although no white sprinkling through at the moment. This gray phenomenon is so interesting and I didn't realize it could be so subtle.

That's absolutely amazing. Lovely horse.
I'm curious.....if she's (I'm guessing mare) registered, what color does it say on her papers? If it says palomino, couldn't that cause some confusion?

My mistake----I see he's a boy in the 3-year old picture. And I note that he's a DWB x Tb, too.

Gorgeous gray equine (the big photo). I remember a horse that looked quite similar to the one shown. His name was San Remo. Unfortunately no available photo of this other gorgeous gray, but at least take a look at his pedigree: http://www.pedigreequery.com/san+remo3
