Pedigree Query

White Gold was having issues with colic on July 28th and was sent to the hospital. She went to surgery later that afternoon and is now on a long road to recovery. It was twisted and displaced. She is in foal to Cloud Ten and has been put on Regumate 2x a day so we pray she pulls through with no complications and that the foal in-utero makes it too. I still cannot believe this has happened to my precious and beloved broodmare.

She has left an orphaned 2 month old colt at home who has been adopted by Auntie Vera. Vera also has a colt by her side so now she is caring for and *thank my lucky stars* is also letting both nurse. They share a 12x 35 stall with a 2x10 making a 12x12 area only accessible by the foals. The foal (Lukas) is still a bit quiet and upset by this but looks like he will be okay. He still calls for her a bit. Poor guy.

Been a long couple days here and the road to full recovery for White Gold is going to be long too. Hope to hear from the hospital this morning for an update on White Gold...

White Gold is doing well and has been taken off fluids. She is being started back on feed slowly. No word about the foal she is carrying. Over on COTH there seem to be a lot of good stories about mares carrying foals to term after colic surgery. One mare had surgery 3 weeks prior to foaling and went onto have a healthy delivery

So it gives me *hope*

Lukas is doing well. His aunt is being so nice to him, which is more than I can say for the other mare who bit him at the water trough today GRRRR Bad mare!@!

I sure hope White Gold recovers well. I had a couple friends who had to send mares to colic surgery and still had healthy foals.

I got a call yesterday from the vet hospital saying that White Gold would be ready to come home Sunday. I arranged for a trailer ride home (thanks so much PennyLane) as my truck is back at the dealership for a 3rd time in a week and the Ford Focas I have as a loaner is useless!

And then this morning I got a call from the vet saying that she was not ready to come home anymore. White Gold had a bit of a fever and then a few hours later they checked again and the fever went down. So the vet wants to keep her there for another 24 hours to make sure it does not go back up. And also to keep a close eye on the incision to make sure it stays clean and dry. I am told from day 5-7 after surgery, is when one would see an infection start if it was going to. And the spike in her temperature is just enough for the vet to want to take another 24 hours to monitor her. So I am praying that it stays down and she might be able to come home tomorrow or perhaps Tuesday. If the temperature goes back up then her incision may start to ooze at which point it may need to be opened and drained.

Little Lukas is doing well at home. He is allowed to nurse most of the time now. He really looks up to his older brother (though not related). He follows him when is it play time with the other foals. When the older brother thinks it is time for a nap, Lukas goes down right beside him for some zzz's. Vera drinks a lot of water so every time she make a trip to the water trough in the field both foals go along with her for a drink too. He eats his pellets too. So that is still going well. Love auntie Vera.

And she is home!!!!! Doing quite well and now on 4 weeks stall rest with 15 min hand walking a couple times a day. Good thing she is a sweet mare and happy to be in or out or where ever we put her. I love her easy-goingness. Will be doing a preg check in a week so see where we stand. Thanks so much for all the good wishes. This mare is truely one of a kind and I could not stand it if I would have lost her this past week.
