Jorge... an interesting grey for you...

Postby Evenheaven » Thu Aug 13, 2009 1:19 pm

Jorge, I found this horse while reading the Midwest Thoroughbred magazine (this is the first issue), there was an interesting grey horse pictured on page 11 in the story called Trainers Reign. The horse is named Fort Prado and it is a picture of him after winning the 2009 Black Tie Affair. The horse has an obvious "patch" of pink skin on his right front breast area and it appears to go down his front right let. The picture shows him getting water poured over him so the pink skin really sticks out next to the grey skin. I can try to scan to picture in for everyone to see.. just really interesting.

I guess it could be organized vitiligo, though that seems unlikely.

Dear Evenheaven,

Thank you so much for the reference. I really appreciate it!
I remember Fort Prado as a runner but I don't remember such
"markings" when he was younger and darker. About the origin of
those "markings"...well I really don't know. Thanks again for keeping
that area of study alive.

I can only see a pic of him galloping but wondered if he were a partial sweater?..it just looks like that mark is dry compared to the rest of him ?

The picture in the magazine shows him standing, being cooled down by sponging, after a race. Even with the water from the sponge running all down his head and chest onto the pink areas and the gray areas, the pink spot is exactly the same shape. I think it truly is an actual permanent coloration.

As far as I know we don't get partial sweaters over here as it's just not hot enough...I've only heard about them from friends in the US and Australia.

I'd be interested if anyone has had any experience of them and what they look like if they are sponged off after a work out?

I really wanna know what that mark is? LOL ! :)

My vote - definately a big irregular sabino marking.

Look at his walk photo.

I'm suprised he was not born an all white horse with that pedigree,

but Fortunate Prospect does not have what the other 3 grandparents have

back in the family.

This walking photo does seem to distinguish the mark as a real marking. The mark is obvious and has a distinct pink hue that suggests this spot is has a different pigmentation than the rest of the horse's skin.

Beyond the issue of marking vs no marking, Fort Prado is a fabulous racehorse! He's a 2001 model that has earned over 1 million dollars and looks like he's been stakes placed every year as 3-year old to 8 years. Wow!

Fort Prado has been retired from racing to stand at Hill N Dale in Barrington, IL for $3,000.

Here's a photo of Fort Prado as a stallion. There are some parts of his coat that look like they might be whiter-than-the-grey portions of his coat:
