Blacks

This article says there are 3 types of blacks: fading, non-fading and smokey. Do you think there are fading and non-fading smokey blacks? Is this even possible?

So fading is just a shade of black? even though they don't like to refer to it as a shade in this article.

Essentially yes. Sun fading is just a term for a horse whose color fades when they've been in the sun. Every color is susceptible to it. My chestnut sun fades BADLY. I know blacks who fade so much they look orange and some who don't fade at all.

I am asking b/c there is a mare that someone is claiming to be a fading black. It looks like a brown/dark bay to me. She has a dark coat, but the brown nose. I still don't think she is even a fading black.

Olympic champion dressage stallion Absent - jet or true black:

There are more than those forms of black and here are a few.
Here is are black horses that are double dilutes/two cream genes or cream and pearl:
Andalusian stallion Xerox - Smokey Creme:

These are horses that have tested as being black genetically, but never really look black. This site calls them light blacks for want of another description. If you go to the Pearl link you'll find a photo of a double pearl gened black stallion as well.

I have 2 FADING black mares...Right now, they are SUPER DARK, FURRY, but in a NICE BLACK coat.....both get sun bleached...Not as badly as the one RMT posted...but they look bayish...I like to check the muzzle...but reading your posts..makes me think that's NOT ALWAYS 100%...

Take a look at the degree of inbreeding. Looks like if there is a rare recessive, (which I think likely) it would pop up.

Absent--truly one of the blackest horses I have seen. Too bad there aren't any top TBs that black running out there.

Absent probably had two things going for him. First he was a non-fading black, and second he had the unique pattern of pigment distribution on the hair shaft that gives the "glow" these horses are know for.
