Gaelic Dancer, a son of Native Dancer, was officially registered at the JC as "bay", but actually he was "gray", reason for which he sired many "gray" runners when mated to solid color mares. The gray stakes winner Chance Dancer (son of a bay mare) is a good example.

Now my question, have you ever seen a photo of Gaelic Dancer? Would really love to see one. Any photo out there?

Let me broaden the reasons for posting this thread:

This one seems like a headscratching brainer!

Native Dancer's son, Gaelic Dancer (1966), was officially registered as a "bay". In the past, someone informed me that, allegedly, this prolific sire was really a "gray" horse, just like his sire
---but I haven't been able to confirm this. If Gaelic Dancer was really a "gray" equine, a fair number of his gets coming from solid color (non-gray) mothers should have been "grays", but
apparently, that was not the case. Only one exception seems to have been produced from this prolific sire and his name is a very suggestive one: Chance Dancer (gray gelding 1975).
Chance Dancer possessed scintillating speed (just like his grandsire, Native Dancer) and even won a couple of stakes races. When one examines the bottom half of Chance Dancer's pedigree
there is not a single close gray ancestor. In short, I would really like to give answer the following questions:

01. Was Gaelic Dancer really a "bay" or a "gray"?
02. Was the odd Chance Dancer really a "gray" or a cropout "very stained white" Thoroughbred?
03. Did Gaelic Dancer really sired other "gray" progeny from non-gray mares?
04. Any available photo of Gaelic Dancer?

● CHANCE DANCER raced for George Arakelian Farms of Blythe, California.
● Matched the Turf Paradise track record by going 6-1/2 furlongs in 1:14.15
● His regular jockey was Richard Culberson.
● Before the Derby, Chance Dancer raced against Affirmed over a mile and was finally bested in the final stretch, not before dueling through all the oval.

New information on CHANCE DANCER.
He arrived 2nd behind Affirmed and ahead of Tampoy in the 1978 (March 18) San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita.

Poor horse died in 1978. I wonder if he got sick or broke down?

As far as I can remember he broke down. He was a blazing speedster!

What a shame. I will look and see if I still have the Affirmed cl ippings this weekend.

In 1978, the officially gray registered, Chance Dancer won the San Vicente Stakes and clicked 1:22-1/5 for 7 furlongs under jockey Richard Culberson. This gelding came from a pair of "bay" parents was trained by Frank Colee and owned by George Arakelian Farms, Inc. Hope this may help the search.

Gaelic Dancer and his son Chance Dancer....did they vanished from the photographic universe?

Thank you very much for keeping in mind my request and trying to assist. Wow, what really amazes me is that we are dealing with a stakes winner (Chance Dancer) who raced against Affirmed and Alydar during the early spring of 1978. In other words, he is not an obscure Thoroughbred. Such is life.
