What color is this mare?

Postby Turn-To Fan » Sun Jul 18, 2010 9:20 pm

I posted this story on the General Forum, but it has turned into a color discussion, so I thought I would also post it here.

Nice story about a 42 year old Arabian:

If you click on the pictures in the story, they will enlarge. The owner says she was born gray and then turned chestnut. Is it possible she is actually rabicano? Is there another explanation?

Horses don't start out gray and turn chestnut. They start out chestnut and turn gray.

Rabicano doesn't look like gray, nor can rabicano look gray.

She also couldn't be true roan (which could possibly be mistaken as gray for someone who doesn't know any better) because True Roan does not exist in Arabians.

Without photos from her "gray" years it would be tough to theorize.

Nice story but that is def. not the mare he has papers for. Even if they were both chestnut the markings don't match. But grey horses don't ever turn solid. Ever. They can repigment (fleabites) to LOOK almost solid but they are still obviously fleabitten.
