"BLACKBERRYBLONDE" WAS A BRIGHT CHESTNUT FILLY WHEN FOALED THIS SPRING. THEN HER MANE AND EARS TURNED BLACK FOLLOWED BY THE CHESTNUT COLOR IN HER COAT. HER TAIL REMAINED A PALE FLAXEN COLOR WITH A WHITE TIP, TYPICAL OF A CHESTNUT.
WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT HER BASE COLOR? SHE IS A FUN FILLY AND IT IS KIND OF NEAT TO SHOW HER TO THE MANY FOLKS WHO COME TO THE FARM WHO ARE AS SURPRISED AS I AM!

If you had DNA tested her as a newborn and gotten the test back red gene only, you would have thought the lab got the hair mixed up for sure!
Not only did she not turn bay but black! She is a beauty!

Wow, she looks like two different equines depending on the side you are looking. From one side she looks like a chestnut based "stained white" from the other side she looks like brown or black based "stained white".
This is a good example on how the "stained white" nomenclature helps define this kind of unusual case.

I assume there is no chance of gray here?

I can't tell if she's actually black or if she's just doing that first shed liver thing that some chestnuts do. I think she's a black that just happened to be born particularly red... unless there is a chance of gray.

Well, my vote is a true black. Air To Apache sired a filly that was similarly colored and marked this year. Was born chestnut and white in appearance. As she matured the red started growing in black. The filly is now shed out totally black and white. There may still be pics early foal pics on her website. The odd color changed made DNA testing necessary for registration as she made such a drastic color change. These are the first two blacks I've ever come across that didn't start out that dark gray, charcoal color. Very interesting indeed. ....the Air To Apache filly was tested and is true black, no agouti. When born it was assumed that she was a chestnut base coat.

Was she tested for Extension as well? or just agouti? Because just playing devils advocate, but this is chestnut

His name is Merwin All A Breeze. Hes a dark chestnut morgan stallion. The picture is from morgancolors.com

she is Ee-aa, so heterozygous not homozygous, but definately black. dna confirmed. dam is black and sire is chestnut base dominant white.

There is nothing chestnut about that Morgan, I'd have to watch the DNA technician do the test myself on that one. He is black. Nope won't go for that.

Both of his parents are clearly chestnut. That shade is common in Morgans. If you look closely you can see that his pasterns are reddish.
