Curious lip mark

Postby r3b3l » Mon Apr 04, 2011 11:00 am

Yesterday I had the chance to see 2 colts, sons of a mare which I own since 2009. These colts belong to the previous owner, and are starting their race training now. One is bay and one black. I had seen the bay one before, when I went to buy the mare.

The black one, a 3 year old, is sired by a black horse too...and has a "pink" lip. Here he is:

The white mark just covers half lip, if you look at him from the other side you don't see it

I took a photo at his legs too, even though I didn't find them "strange" enough to relate them to any kind of sabino whatsoever..

Do you think that face markings have to do with any particular gene ?

My mare has no outstanding marks on her, just those little spots perhaps:

And his sire is all black except for the 3 coronets. His half brother, the bay colt I mentioned, has no white at all (curiously he is sired by another black horse, a full brother this colt's dad :) ) .

There's definitely sabino involved there and judging by the very off center snip maybe splash too. The dam's markings ARE significant because those spots indicate a white suppression gene and she's a chestnut (white expression is at it's maximum on red bases). Not only is their presence significant but their size and amount shocking. It's telling me that genetically she carries a fair bit of white but that suppression gene is blocking it a bit. Blacks tend to be the most suppressed so the black son should have been very minimal and he has even more significant white than her. Could you tell if he had spots in his socks too?

I recently saw this guy with a similar look:

It goes all the way across though it's less visible on the other side.

Also my new filly has something similar (and her "blaze" trails off to her right nostril like the black's snip, plus she's red based so she *should* express more white):

Her dam is also a suppressed chestnut who has a fair bit of white even with the suppression. This filly didn't get very much at all but what she got is interesting!

Headless, what a coincidence! the mark looks very similar. The colt is here in the Canary Islands, but he is too young for romantic dates hahaha ! His father would be very pleased to take his place however :P, he is as black, but not as good-looking, in my opinion. But his owner won't cover any mares for the "public", just his own. :? ...Well, he misses it, your mare looks great ;)

ACC, thanks a lot ! your answer was very helpful. That explains why her bay son has no white at all, every outcome has it's reason. I thought those spots weren't related, but I knew they had to be relevant in some sense. I couldn't see if this guy had them, because of all the hay... but next time I have a chance I'll check. (PS. that filly is sooo cute)

So what markings could I expect for the foal she will have this year ? Knowing that she could carry sabino but also white suppression...I covered her with my own stallion this time, Lorentz, the one I asked about in this topic.

Anyway ... we'll clear doubts soon, she is due the 23rd of this month, but this last weeks are the worst ! I can't wait to see the baby !

Oh! My!!! You could get LOTS of color from that combination if the genetics land just right!

We have a new little guy round here!!

My mare Arroyo finally decided to have her baby, today more or less at 5am..... after a 12 month pregnancy which was driving me crazy  I think I bit all my nails these days

She was on her own, we arrived at 6am and the foal was already all dry and clean. Both in perfect state. We helped him feed the first time because he was falling over just before getting to his objective hahaha poor thing... but by now he is already stading by himself and feeding with no problem.

He is bay with 3 low stockings and a star... with white suppresion I believe, he's got little black spots on the coronet

PICS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE :)

Congrats on the new foal! Can't wait to see photos.

ACC, I too, have a chestnut filly born this year that is completely blinged out and she has a blaze that trails off to her nostril and she also has the pink marking, although the photos in her thread don't show it that well.

Oh she's beautiful!! I love her blaze! Very unusually shaped. It doesn't look like she'll gray either. YAY!!! Was she removed from her dam?

She won't gray. She'll remain a chestnut. She's a huge, strapping filly. She's going to be really big.

We did take her off her dam. Her dam is a huge, 17h Pleasant Tap mare who has an identical blaze, but very little other white.

Here's the dam--

Introducing...............at last !! 8)

Veeeery long legs, he doesn't know how to deal with them yet  He gets up from the floor on a single jump, but walking is another issue !!

3 stockings, and 3 face markings... the star in the middle of the eyes, a tiny spot lower down, and another little spot betweeen the nostrils.

Ermine like his mum. Looks as if the sabino gene tried to have its way and managed some pretty nice socks, but white suppression came to ruin the party hahaha! But I love his stockings either way

Image

He is very curious and not scared at all from us. And he greeted me this morning with a whinny... it was so cuuuuuuuuuuuuuute

Image

PS. I love his big eyes !
