OMG!!!! We are the Kentucky Horse Park now with Sato for Breyerfest.
We bath Sato and do an video interview for the Kentucky Horse Park. We put Sato away and head for the gift shop to browse around. Well what do we see...

This picture was taken at the Kentucky Horse Park in the main gift shop at the entrance. It gave me goose bumps!! There are 4 models on each side of the table. On the left there is Sato on the top and Secretariat on the bottom. On the right of the table there is Zenyatta on top and Rachel Alexandra... OMG is Sato really in thier company :) I was THRILLED and speachless.

I Love the KHP gift shop! I spent way too much last time I was there.

I had been a life long Breyer Horse collector, but once they went out east with their company they changed some things, and the thing that bothers me the most is they re-use fairly new molds over for other horses.

In no way should Ruffian's mold be used for Rachel. They also used it for Rags to Riches a year or two before. The Zenyatta mold was originally Afleet Alex. I can't remember who Sato's was used for, I think it was Barbaro. Forgot about the Secretariat one there.

Anyway, congrats, it has got to be an exciting feeling to see your horse in a statue.

I wrote them asking them to do a statue of an adopted lucky OTTB and have the funds go for the places that save them, never got a response back.... :?

Sato is on the Cigar mold, which was also used for Barbaro. Zenyatta's mold was originally Lonesome Glory. It was also used for Seattle Slew & Phar Lap (despite their having been a Phar Lap mold from the '80s), among others.

I don't collect as much as I used to - I'm broke, plus I barely have room for the ones I already have - but I'm still something of a nerd about them. Not a real big fan of some of the newer molds, either.

This site is a good resource for the history of Breyer molds, it's fairly comprehensive & kept very up-to-date:

Oh, my . . . I don't have time for this right now, but having inherited my cousin's collection & having my own . . . I think I see a winter project!

Thanks for the site!

I really wanted an original mold for Zenyatta because she is so special.

Thank you for the info and link! Very cool!

Agree, Zenyatta deserved her own model, and in NO WAY should Ruffian's been re-used. Not to mention the model they did of her the colors were not consistent; the one I got from a mail order place, her color was much lighter than she actually was, then I saw another one later on in a store that was darker.

It was great when the original Breyer Molding Co. was near me in Chicago, but when Reeves(?) took it over, I did not like the changes in the models too much. Still have some but used to be a model nerd also! LOL
