SALTAMONTES (Spanish word for “Grasshopers”) is officially registered as a dark bay or brown filly, foaled in March 12 2008. Hope she is a wrongly labeled “black” Thoroughbred as her mom. Good luck!

She's registered black by the JC. Don't know why someone here would change that.

I suggest we double check this case again for there seems to be
an official "dark bay or brown" label assigned to her; and I not referring to the Del Mar database. The fact that her dam is registered as "black"
is auspicious. Of course we all hope that at the end of the research Sunday Silence is correct. :D

As Jorge said, she is registered dark bay or brown.

This photo shows a horse that most likely IS brown and not black:

As a foal, no question brown and not black IMO:

The only photo I can find of Just Gabi (bad head shot) does appear black, which makes sense given her sire. The brown may have come from Wheelaway.

Just Gabi was registered black in the race entries while she was running.

And look who the damsire is of Saltamontes: Devil His Due!!! UGH, why could I not get a black filly from him!!!! LOL

That close up photo of her head shows the lighter brown color on her nose, kind of like Ruffian had. I think the JC would use that against her in registering her black, but it does say black on pedinq. Strange...and then the ones that are true blacks they say they are dk b/b

Songster was registered black but he had some brownish tones to him. Straight Story is darker than Songster but registered dark bay.

Don't the owners at time of registration indicate the horse's color? I think that many people simply put down dk bay/brown rather than black to avoid haggling with the JC over it.

This is absolutely, 100% true.

Hi Sunday Silence, have you ever been able to find anything more about Mayakovsky since we talked about him awhile ago? I sure have not, and it is a shame he got sent to Chile (where they have 7 ft. of snow now) and nothing is listed about him. :?:

Was he something special color wise? I've got some old photos from when he was on the track somewhere.

He was IMO Black Beauty! Incredibly beautiful, ran some great races, and when retired was sent to New York, sadly, and I guess things are not going well in that state for racing(?) so his owners just up and sold him to somewhere in Chile. The farm owners in NY just loved him and told me they were quite sad to see him be sent over there with no paperwork to come home...

There are I believe a couple years of foals from him here, but I'm not sure where they all went.
