His croup is steep but he is handsome, but I would not want to breed splash overos if I knew they could/would be deaf. Just my opinion.

I can't imagine trying to train one knowing it could not respond to voice commands. I'd have to duck tape my mouth to be fair training it. They could never hear other horses calling them
or your voice when it was feeding time...........be like knowingly having a deaf human baby......"oh they don't need to hear, they can taste, see, smell, and feel" too srtange for me. I think
some geneticts are better left to dwindle away for good.

I believe his dam or half sister is in Canada. She produced a palomino marked similarly. Beautiful! Wonder if he has any offspring and how often he passes his lovely markings. Anyone know?? So unique. Love him. Just too far way......nice find.

A lot of splashes are deaf. It doesn't seem to bother them, they don't know any different. Some trainers say they are easier to deal with as they don't spook at loud noises! Unfortunately you can't select for or against it as it is a result of early development. A loose guide is that horses with white up to or over their ears are more often deaf but that is not definite, others are deaf that aren't like that and others hear fine.

Thanks Summerhorse. I noticed his white wasn't all that close to the ears, thus the question about his being deaf. I'll bet there's a pretty good chance he's not. I too have heard of deaf horses as very successful mounts. Breeder has to decide if benefits out way the risks. Anyway, we'll assume he's normal.....and VERY handsome:)

Well that is good to know they all aren't, I was told they were all deaf.
Could two splash parents that hear produce a deaf foal I wonder?

Wymanda,
Thanks for noticing this very interesting important detail, namely,
that:
SHOWOFF
http://www.pedigreequery.com/showoff2
is a common ancestor to both:
WHAT A BIRD
http://www.pedigreequery.com/catch+a+bird and
WHATINBLUEBLAZES

Great detection!
