Early Horse Importers

Postby [email protected] » Tue Jan 13, 2009 9:34 am

First...I wish you all a GREAT 2009!!!

I would guess this subject would be considered "Research", so I'll give it a try.

Am looking for names and locations of early horse importers...late 1800's thru 1940's.

There of course was Carl Hagenbach, importer of horses (general use for circus', menagerie's, zoo's, etc.) as well a exotic wild animals; Holbert, Greeley, Lang, Cronin, etc. Some imported Draft/Coach horses, others "registered horses", which I would presume Thoroughbreds for racing/breeding, etc.

I would presume that the early years would be to the east coast, then shipped by land. In the 1900's and thereafter, some would come to the west coast.

Any information will be greatly appreciated! Thanx, Pat

Pat,

Have you looked at the TB Heritage site? They have lots of info on early breeders.

Probably the most famous really early importer, other than Virginians, was James Jackson around 1830 or so. Importer of Glencoe, Priam, Galopade and Leviathan. Richard Ten Broeck and Keene Richards imported Australian. All pre Civil War.
