help with a tattoo research

Postby pam » Sun Aug 13, 2006 7:05 pm

How can I find out who a horse is through his tattoo? I do not have papers and can a tattoo start with an X?

Yes, the first letter can be an X. It would mean that the horse was born in 1994 and is 12. You can go to the Jockey Club's website and do a tattoo research. It costs $35.

Sorry, I should have finished my thought. I read your answers to the previous subject. What I was wondering is I think this horse raced in the U.S. the tattoo supposedly is x32909. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Well that's all anyone could tell you, X denotes 94 as the year of birth. If the tattoo is clearly legible and you are certain of the digits, the balance would be the rest of the registration number, starting with 94, or 9432909. Only the Jockey Club can look up a tattoo.

Thank you again Madelyn. I will probably call the Jockey Club. I just don't own this horse, and was looking at possibly buying. So, was trying to do my research from here first.

Ah. While you are talking to the Jockey Club, you might have them check on the horse's status. If the horse's papers are lost, it costs $150 to replace them. However, if the papers have been turned in to the Jockey Club then the horse is "without pedigree." Either way, it could be a costly exercise.

If it is a mare and you intend to breed her for a Thoroughbred foal, you may or may not need the papers. In KY I have successfully registered foals from mares acquired without their papers.

Sorry, I've been away. Thanks for the information Madelyn. The broodmare angle is exactly what I was looking at.
