importation mares to NM 1881

Postby dee of CA » Thu Jun 14, 2007 4:04 pm

I am new to this board. I am mostly interested in history and pedigrees of all horses, and would love to comunicate with serious persons.

There were 20 TB mares imported by Frank Sherwin to NM for the Maxwell Grant.

Does anyone have the Thoroughbred of California article Jan 1951 about these mares?

I am interested in the names and pedigrees.

Thanks in advance, Dee of CA

Here's a start:

"CS Horses

The CS horse-breeding program began in 1885, tracing its origins to a visionary but ill-fated horse program played out in the early 1880's near Cimarron. Frank Sherwin, the president of the Maxwell Land Grant, believing the climate of northern New Mexico to be ideal for thoroughbred horses, purchased 20 of the finest English mares available. The mares were acquired at a cost of $1,000 each. Uhlan, a French-bred stallion of flawless pedigree was purchased for $15,000. The mares and stallion made the long and difficult trip to New Mexico. Regrettably, the enterprise failed, Sherwin was fired and the horses sold at a Sheriff's auction in 1885. Frank Springer purchased two stallions and a dozen fillies at the sale. This well-bred band of horses formed the nucleus of the CS Ranch horse program and produced many foundation horses of the American Quarter Horse breed. "

If you do get the article please feel free to share. :D It's difficult to reconcile the facts as recorded in the ASB with the long-standing CS ranch tradition that Sherwin's imports provided the nucleus of their breeding program.

Sherwin also imported UHLAN (1869 br c x The Ranger - Lady Mechante x Turnus[USA].

The names of his 20 imported mares as recorded ASB vol. 4 are appended below. Precious few (~7) live foals were recorded for these mares while owned by Sherwin, including those in utero when the mares were shipped from GB. Ref. ASB vol. 5, by 1885 Uhlan and all but one of the surviving mares were owned by J. Lucas Turner's Kinloch Stud, Missouri. The exception, Angela, was owned by Swope in KY.
