A Racing Legacy: Roedown's Horses Are Bred for Success
By Ginna Rogers-Gould

The crowd was riveted watching the horses thunder over the four-foot jump in the 8th race of the Marlborough Hunt Races at Roedown. Meanwhile, in the little red barn at the back of the farm, a mare named Alden's Ambition was going through her own paces.

As the herd trampled the finish line of the race, the mare nuzzled a pretty newborn filly with a star in the center of her forehead. She had just given birth to Roedown Racer, nicknamed for the annual event held on the farm by owners Jeanne and Hal Clagett. They hoped that such an auspicious beginning would bode well for its future.

The Clagetts maintain a thoroughbred breeding and training operation at Roedown Farm. This year, they have 16 broodmares, eight of which are due to foal sometime in early spring. A closed circuit television system connecting the broodmare barn to the house enables a 24-hour watch on the progress of the Moms-to-be.

"They usually arrive sometime between midnight and daylight… You have to be on call," said Clagett. "When the foal starts arriving, you get down to the stall to give whatever assistance you can… The first milk, when the foal gets its colostrum from the mare, signals quitting time. That's when I usually leave the stall to go home to put my head on pillow and dream about their future."

Will they be winners of the Maryland Fund? This incentive program was created at the local racetracks to encourage the improvement of thoroughbred breeding and racing of Maryland-bred horses. Hal Clagett is already a four-time winner.

Or will they grow up to be a winning steeplechase horse? Christy Clagett Hal's niece and Chair of race day at Roedown, recalls, "Many horses who got their start on this course have gone on to fame of their own. Lonesome Glory won our 2 mile Mattaponi flat race in 1997 then became the first steeplechase horse to earn over one million dollars."

For Hal Clagett the road to fame and fortune started virtually at the cradle. "I was four years of age when I got on a horse for the first time," he said. "As you move forward, you become interested not in just riding but eventually in performing either in the show ring …or in the hunt field or with progeny going to the race track …to earn its pay."

Then on his wedding day in 1942, one of his more memorable wedding presents was "a breeding to anyone of the stallions at Rockbridge Farm in Leesburg, VA." Duty in WW II interfered with the implementation of this generous gift but eventually he was able to breed a mare, named Glimpse, to Charlie O, a horse that had run 3rd in the Kentucky Derby. Easter morning of 1949 as the Clagetts were leaving for church, Glimpse presented her owner with his first real racehorse, which he named Glimpse O.

"Breeding a mare like Glimpse O or Alden's Ambition starts when you look at her extended pedigree," said Clagett. "You look at the sire and you look at the mare and you put together a picture of what you would imagine the resulting foal would have by way of conformation...You make your choices. Eleven months later you've got a potential race horse like Roedown Racer."

For the first four to six months, the foal plays and eats by the side of its mother in the pasture. Once it is weaned, "I show it at the Maryland Horse Breeders Annual Yearling Show, get ribbons to confirm my judgment, then as a two year old …you hope it wins its first race," said Clagett.

"At its first race start, it tells you yay or nay, and you go on from there… With a yay horse, like Roedown Racer, you can tell by the look in her eye whether she enjoys racing, and a good thoroughbred does love to run and win," said Clagett. Meanwhile, the nays can be magnificent in the hunt field or the show ring or may even end up as the best friend of a little girl with braces on her teeth.

So what happened to the mare named Alden's Ambition? She retired with a half million dollar in earnings and plans to watch the racing at the Marlborough Hunt Races at Roedown from her home in the field next to the parking area.

Her filly, Roedown Racer (given the official track name of Alden's Prospect), is following in her mother's footsteps both in winnings at the track and in the quality of her foals. This year, she will be watching her daughter, Jet Prospect, run and hopefully win, in one of the flat races on her home turf.

The '05 x Duckhorn is her only registered TB foal to date.
