Have a chance to acquire this Stallion and need advise

Postby Indy » Mon Nov 05, 2007 12:47 pm

I am new to thoroughbred linage. I have a chance to acquire this Stallion and other than War Admiral and Man O' War I know nothing about these lines. I would appreciate any suggestions on whether or not to get him.

Thanks,

India

The question I would have is, what would you do with him if you bought him? He is a 15, going 16, year old horse who earned about $60K in 34 starts (averaging less than $2,000 per start). He has only had a few Thoroughbred foals. I, personally, love the Clever Trick line -- vis a vis my boy, Rocking Trick. But the difference is that Rocking Trick was a relatively young multiple group 1 stakes winner coming off the racetrack when I got him, and we have some nice yearlings headed to the racetrack. Also, Rocky's half sister is also a multiple G1SW. Dantrick simply lacks any really serious racehorses in his immediate family.

It is pretty unlikely you could find anyone who wanted to PAY to breed to Dantrick, so any return on the horse would be long and possibly painful (ie: it could cost you a LOT to get there from here).

Maybe if you specified what your goal is, folks here could be a bit more helpful. In the racing world, he is what I call the kind of horse that would make a GREAT gelding.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

that gelding word always hurts. It just takes sooo much to get a stud to profit, I know I bought one before I knew what it really takes. It really does take stakes winnings, and all the things Madelyn has listed. If not your investment and chance to prove him will cost you so much it would just be easier to put that into the purchase price. Unless you are emotionally attached to this guy look around before you buy that is if you are trying to breed for profit as a Thoroughbred stud for race. Even though I have loved my stallion from day one and knew what he would produce would be conformation correct foals....we will be years till see a profit -if we even do--- our means to prove him are limited....good luck in your search hope this helped a little.

That's why he is going to make a great sport stallion and it's why I bought him.
