Davona Dale

Postby Filly007 » Thu May 01, 2008 7:51 pm

I have been trying to get an accurate report on the whereabouts of Davona Dale. The Jockey Club does not show her as deceased, although she would be in her early 30s if she was still alive.
I have been able to track her to Coolmore, Ireland. I e-mailed them twice. The first time, the asst. manager claimed he had never heard of her. The second time, I received no response.
This is a mare who was a HUGE winner in her day. She is listed in the Blood Horse Top 100 TB of the 20th century, and now no one can really tell me what happened to her.
There are "stories" that she has died. Barbara Livingston has posted on her website that she has died; however, no one knows where she is buried.
I find this all very disturbing that no one really knows whether she is dead or not!
I have been able to track and find ALL of the other horses listed in the BH Top 100 book, including an e-mail from Alysheba's trainer in Saudi Arabia!!
Thanks.

Didn't she die at Coolmore Ireland? She may not have a gravesite there; let's face it, sometimes they go to the renderer after death. You could email coolmore Ireland and ask them:

You obviously did not READ my whole posting. I have contacted Coolmore twice.
I find it dishonorable that Coolmore would RENDER a champion like Dale. Do they have so much money that they need not show respect for a great mare? Why have they not "bothered" to tell the Jockey Club?
I'm starting to suspect she wound up like Exceller or Ferdinand. No one knows where she is.

 Sorry, usually I am more careful about jumping in like that.

Did you see this posting on Dan Illman's blog at drf.com?

"We recieved the news from Coolmore today probably helped by the all the recent queries. Reportly that Davona Dale Died on August 8,2007.at Coolmore She then lived a long life. I hope the Jockey Club will update
this as this is reported from Weatherbys Thank You Helene Bailey

That doesn't answer what happened to her remains, but I'm sure if Weatherby's has a specific date, it must be accurate. They are rather sticklers for that sort of thing.

No, I had not seen the above posting.
Steve Haskin (Blood Horse) had e-mailed Coolmore on my behalf since *I* couldn't get them to respond. Coolmore responded to his inquiry, first saying she died in 2007 and then retracting that year and saying 1997. THAT is what made me very suspicious of their information.
I surely hope this is now correct.

Just a thought: when you formally inform the Jockey Club of a death, you have to surrender the papers. If she didn't die during a foaling when her death report was needed, perhaps it is just that they wanted to keep her papers with all those wonderful wins recorded. I know they are a big business-like organization, but maybe someone there just thought they'd skip a step and see if they could be unnoticed.

When Magic's mom died, it killed me to surrender those papers, but I had to because she wasn't DNA typed and I needed to declare it in order to bypass that part of the registration process. Thankfully, scanners had just been invented, and I got a nice printout that looks a lot like her papers.

I have filed dozens of death reports to the Jockey Club, and have never turned in the papers.

From the rule book:

16. DEATH REPORTS
The death of a registered Thoroughbred, or foal for which registration is pending, should be reported to The Jockey Club Registry Office within 30 days after the death by submitting a completed Report of Deaths form, or through Interactive RegistrationTM at registry.jockeyclub.com, and returning the Certificate of Foal Registration, if issued. (Bold print mine)

I doubt if they spend a lot of time chasing after people to return the certificates, but they would not issue my foal's papers without returning the mare's.

That makes sense, as when I was seeking her out in 2001 they said she'd died 3 or 4 years earlier. That doesn't answer the question of whether or not she was buried, but the timing matches Coolmore's answer.

Usually, when I look for old horses I later learn are deceased, the Jockey Club has no record of their passing.

Just as FYI, Calumet Grade I winners I recall dying in recent years are Sugar and Spice, Criminal Type and Before Dawn.

As a supporter of Old Friends, I know he died on his way to Old Friends. I believe there is information on their web page about him.
