Owner / breeder of past time mares

Postby Ruffian 1972 » Thu Mar 24, 2005 10:27 am

Hi,
can someone tell me how to find out owners/breeders/location of past time mares (preferably for free)
The mares in question are Belle Sweep, Mattie Houser, Carla Mar, Aralc and Briarelan - all were bred to Grog around 1947, 1948.
Thanks.

Are you looking for who bred the mares, or who bred their foals out of Grog? Or both?

Well, in any case.....I did a little looking-up. Hopefully the info you're looking for is in here someplace.

Location is a toughie, it's hard to find that for pre-1950 horses. I gave the breeder's home state when I could find it, but that doesn't say much - they could well have boarded their horses elsewhere.

Belle Sweep - 1940 br. m. Sweeping Away x Lucia. Bred by Leroy Wardlow of Corona, CA.
Produced four foals by Grog - '44 f. Roberta Queen, '46 g. The Manxman, '47 f. Derby Fizz - all bred by A. A. Schueler.

Mattie Houser - 1933 br. m. Bisouri x Cameo. Bred by C. E. Cooper (of CA) & John McKeon (of NY).
Also had four by Grog - '44 g. Schnapps, '45 f. Creole Lady, '47 f. Irish Horn, '49 f. Grogolette - the first three bred by A. A. Schueler, the last by Fred Sneddon.

Carla Mar - 1935 b. m. Xenofol x Jane Taylor. Bred by J. W. Marchbank of Walnut Creek, CA.
Had five fillies by Grog - '45 Royal Fizz, '46 Leatrice Max, '47 Provide, '48 Ramos Fizz, '51 Grogett. All bred by A. A. Schueler, except the last by Seth & Mollie Vennie.

Aralc - 1940 br. m. Sortie x Lady Brown Bud. Bred by Raoul Walsh of Willets, CA.
Produced three Grog fillies, '45 Bar Maid, '47 Rico Royal, '48 Brandy Toddy. All three bred by A. A. Schueler.

Briarelan - 1933 br. m. Sun Briar x Elan. Bred by Willis Sharpe Kilmer of Binghamton, NY (who I believe boarded his breeding stock in KY).
Had two by Grog - '42 g. Eggnog, bred by Kinmead Farm, and '43 c. Toddy, bred by Walter J. Thompson.

All foals that were not already in the DB have been added.

Anything else? :)

Thanks, Lucy!!
Just curious where do you look up breeders/owners info on past time race horses?

I was actually wondering what happened to Grog after Seabiscuit retired - if he died young as well - nobody seems to know.... I was hoping to find out more through the brood mares - obviously he was alive in 1947 and then he vanished. Now what? :) It's a mystery!

Wait - my eyes are tired today :) If the filly Grogett was born in 1951, Grog was alive in 1950.

What is the home state of A. A. Schueler, Fred Sneddon and Seth & Mollie Vennie? Maybe Grog was in the care of these breeders...

Thanks again and Happy Easter!

I have some old editions of the American Stud Book, which lists the breeders of both the broodmares and the foals. :) The earlier ones have lots of handy appendixes, one of which is a list of all the breeders and their home cities. The last one I have with that covers 1938-1941, which is why I have the info for the mares' breeders, but not the foals'.

Oh, okay! With that in mind, I did a little more looking-up. 1945 volume of the American Racing Manual shows him standing stud at Buena Suerte Ranch in Chino, CA. The 20-acre Farm, along with fifteen mares and Grog, were owned by A. A. Schueler. Bingo!

Grog died in 1950, according to ASB v.XX.

Hope that helps! :D

Thanks so much, Lucy! You are a star :) Puzzle sovled!

So, Grog died relatively young too. Wonder if that was a genetic thing...

What is ASB v. XX? Sorry, I am not all that familiar with race horses terminologies...

Thanks again!!

"ASB" stands for American Stud Book. "v.XX" would be volume XX (or 20).
