I have recently found several rare prints of thoroughbreds, daiting from around the late 1700's to the mid 1800's. I have tried to research the horses depicted in the engravings, which are facinating. Here's what i found:
In one print entitled:
"BAY MALTON Beating GIMCRACK at Newmarket for 1000 Guineas."
it shows 2 horses running over a flat track. I was able to find GIMCRACK here:
http://www.pedigreequery.com/gimcrack
and:
http://www.tbheritage.com/Portraits/Gimcrack.htm
"There was a meeting of two days at Newmarket this time of year, to see the sweetest little horse run that ever was; his name is Gimcrack, he is delightful. Lord Rockingham, the Duke of Grafton, and General Conway kissed hands the day Gimcrack ran. I must say I was more anxious about the horse than the Ministry."
Facinating animal. But the is no reference on Pedigree Query to BAY MALTON. There is however at: http://www.bloodlines.net/TB/Bios2/BayMalton.htm
"Bred by Mrs. Ayrton of Malton he was the first foal of his dam, Cade Mare, who was lent to Mrs. Ayrton for one year by her father, Mr. Fenton, at her wedding celebration. Mr. Preston, owner of Sampson (bl.c. 1745 Blaze), was also a guest and at his suggestion Mrs. Ayrton booked the mare to Sampson. Bay Malton was considered to be the smallest of the normally substantial Sampson offspring although of more quality than the rest."
The other picture holds the question... It is of a single horse being walked by a jockey, wearing lots of covering (?). It is entitled:
"Mr. Quick's Bay Horse GENERAL after Beating DRIVER and Two others at Epsom."
I found several DRIVER's, but alas no GENERAL.
Facinating print, does anyone know who GENERAL might be? Any other insight into the horses mentioned?
Thanks for any help...

sounds like you found some fascinating pictures...love old horse prints and paintings.
if i remember my margerite henry books correctly, cade (assuming father of named mare) was a son of the godolphin arabian.
a few years back, yale's museum of british art had a wonderful visiting exhibit of stubbs paintings. baltimore museum of art also has some interesting equestrian paintings as well as a collection of trophies. entertaining to read the names on those trophies as they were won by a few triple crown winners.
saw brushed bayou had a very nice work on the other forum...sounds like she is doing well.
cheers! ak
