How does one find really old produce records?

Postby StayOutFront » Thu Nov 10, 2005 9:34 am

Last year, someone on another forum discussed Ruthless' progeny, as well as that of her famous sisters. Seems their breeder enjoyed experimenting. Ruthless, for instance, was bred to her sire and produced a deformed foal. Something else really strange happened along their line, such as one of Ruthless' sisters being bred to a brother.

I have APR records to 1940, which falls many decades short of covering such early breedings.

Are such records kept in stud books? Produce books? Somewhere else?

I'm fortunate enough to have a local bookstore who carries many such old volumes, so I can go pester them. But I'd love to at least know what type of book to ask for.

Thanks for any information!

Barbara, Ive got some very old American Stud Books, and even some General Stud Books from England which will give mares progeny. Each book usually has 4 or 5 years worth for each mare. They dont have the racing records, tho. If you prowl Ebay you can sometimes find them, or you can check www.abebooks.com and do a search for american stud books or general stud books, and you'll come up with some neat stuff.

Thanks for your response, halo!

I went to the antiquarian bookstore and looked through their American Stud Books - they recommended those, too, and had a bunch. It was before I saw your response, and I thought it was odd most mares only had a few years' progeny listed. I decided they all just had short breeding careers ... rather than that the Stud Books back then only listed a few years at a time. Duh.

I'll go back there tomorrow to look a bit deeper.

Thanks again!!
