Site Suggestion

Postby syndeis » Tue May 09, 2006 3:54 pm

I think it would be appropriate for minors to be flagged, so other members know when their dealing with a youngster.

It could change the language used in response, it could spare someone from making disparaging remarks because they don't know who they're dealing with, or save members time when researching a request that isn't entirely what it seems.

Just a thought.

Excellent thought ... with one major flaw in that it relies on the truthfulness of the person setting up the account. I've run into too many kids that lie (or at least try to) about their age, but eventually give themselves away in how they handle things.

Thanks Sam,

the defining moment for a bright idea comes when you put electricity to it. If the light goes out it wasn't such a good idea after all.

Still think it's a good idea, but we'd have to FIND MILES!! to get it implimented and he went to ground months ago from what I can see -- and there's a couple dozen things I keep hoping will get done first.

The other thing is that I'm sure there's a lot of adults here who wouldn't want their age listed and I don't think you could flag kids without subjecting adults to it too.

It would be nice, though, to know if a poster is a child right off the bat.

But then, I still need to poke Rogue and see if she can find/turn on the "ignore poster" feature.

But then no one talk with me! The sacrifices I make.

If it is something that could be put on the list of to do things, from my perspective I would not care if the adult were 18 or 56. My biggest concern is that 13 year old. I am also concerned about their safety as well. It is and can be a cruel world.

Thanks for listening.

I'm wondering if I should take that as an implied insult that if the feature were turned on, I'd be the only one people would use it on.

In that case, I guess I'm wondering why you think flagging a poster as a child would keep them safe? You're talking physically, right? To me, that would only make them a target.

I'd rather just know it's a kid so I can skip the posts entirely (which is why I'd like the ignore poster feature turned on).

Sam,

I was only poking fun at myself, if you thought differently please know it was not the correct thought.

I know identifying a minor could make them a target. Kids and internet forums are dangerous. I can only hope parents are knowledgeable about where their children are chating, safeguard emails, and personal information. As you pointed out it usually doesnt take long to discover who's who anyway.

I guess I do not know how the ignore feature works.

If you turn it on, then you would not see their post?

Correct. The boards I use that have the ignore feature turned on, if the person posts, their name would be visible with a note that they're on your ignore list and a hyper link that will open that specific post in a new window if you really want to read it.

Think of it as a mute button.

I tend to reserve using it for really young kids or people who like to pad their post count by posting nonsense. I think I have a grand total of 5 people on ignore for all the boards I'm on. One's a child that just annoys the heck out of me. One is a racist scumbag the mods refuse to axe for some reason. The other 3 are all variations on a theme. The kind of people who make 100+ posts a day and 80% of them amount to "Meetoo, I totally agree with that" and nothing else, so you could eliminate their posts and it would have no effect on the discussion.

There's two here I'd like to mute ... and no, neither of them are people I've tussled with.

Hi Sam! I looked for the ignore feature and couldn't find it anywhere. That doesn't mean it isn't there, just that it's not where I can get to it... either that or I just missed it, but I looked a couple of times. Sorry!

It might not be on this version. I'll poke Sid when she ... reappears (I lost her .. I think the HSers she's been 'babysitting' abducted her) and see if she's any ideas where it might be hiding.

Not kidnapped. LOL And I think tomorrow is the last day for this school year that I get to deal with my heathen children.

Rogue, this might start you on your quest:
http://www.phpbb.com/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=150925 I've installed mods from that author before and he IS trustworthy, so you're good there, but whether this will suit your needs is another story, as is whether you can mod this without Miles in attendance.

GENERALLY, the Ignore User feature on newer versions of PHPBB is an included bit, unless the installer chooses to not put it in, either by direct omission or because they don't know what the utility is for.

HTH,
Sid
I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but, I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant.

Thanks, but I'd better not do any changing of anything without Miles... actually, I doubt I CAN even change anything. I was hoping it was a feature that was already here that I could just activate... like the PM's or something. I would love to try some of the stuff listed on that site (like how to stop the porn registries... but I think Miles has to handle that "heavy stuff."
