Stallions

Postby hpkingjr » Tue Jan 16, 2007 9:25 pm

If you want to exploit the Storm Cat/Kris S nick, then three suggestions come to mind, all brand new for 2007.

1. British Blue at Stonewall returns the Hail To Reason and His Majesty.(5K)

2. Osidy at Spendthrift (4K) is out of a champion Germany mare from a good family. 16.1, big hip, not the greatest front end but not the worse.

3. Forest Grove at Airdrie (7.5K) has the most speed of the three and your mare needs some speed added to her pedigree. Airdrie also does a nice job of supporting their new stallions.

This mare could do okay in a regional market. In Kentucky, I suspect a lot of buyers won't look past the page. The Kentucky commercial market has a VERY specific idea of what it wants, and this mare does not fit that bill. At ALL.

Go to New York and take this mare to Eltish for the PROVEN Cox's Ridge-Kris S cross. It won't guarantee a runner for your mare, but it increases the chance that some good genetic material will contribute to the future racing suitability of the foal. Foal her out in Pennsylvania, get a registered PA-bred, and sell the foal privately. Eltish is a well-enough respected racehorse sire that you should get some interest, especially if the young Service Stripe (her first decent stallion date) turns out a runner.

Conversely, talk to the folks at Saratoga Glen (where Eltish stands) and see if you can make a deal with them. If you get a NY-bred foal, the resulting offspring can run in the restricted NY-bred races. Those can be quite lucrative. A nice enough foal might be good enough for the F-T Saratoga Select (NY-bred yearlings). I personally think that given this mare's lack of production you'd be better off in PA with the 20% breeder awards (for foals sired by non-PA stallions), and the foal could run in statebred races.

If you decide to keep the foal to race, I would definitely forget about Kentucky and go to Pennsylvania. Get the PA-bred breeders awards AND the track earnings, and have some fun. Just remember that you are looking at not less than $20,000 from conception to first start, so be prepared. Good breeders awards will help offset that. Best of luck to you.

But Kentucky's Breeder Awards are very, very good too. And a GA horse owner could drive to KY to watch his or her horse run.

This is likely a GOOD breed to race mare. Looking at the Cox's Ridge cross, there is Out of Place. Eltish is an bit of an ungainly looking horse with a short, squat neck, very upright in the front with a long back, and it is a LONG way to go to New York to inspect a stallion.

Actually we are now a 2 state family, and I'm posting the inquiry for my daughter and her SO who have just moved to a lovely farm in Paris. So the easiest solution for the mare is Kentucky. Having said that, we do like Eltish, and we have a pair of Vanlandingham mares (Miss Muscles and Van Van) are love the Cox's Ridge line. We're kind of iconoclastic - coming from an eventing background, we believe in the tough durable old TB's,and would love to be in a niche that supports that sort of breeding with a) hopes that America will return to valuing that TB and b) certainty that the horses produced by these efforts will surely be suitable for sporthorses when their running days are over.

I am no expert by any stretch of the imagination...very much still learning...but in looking at some of the boys at Wintergreen, it looked like this mare might match nicely with a few of them (Century City, Pollards Vision, Five Star Day).

And what do y'all think of Zavata? Nice sireline for speed and Cox Ridge as well on the damside. Not a proven stallion though.

Best of luck with your search and finding the best opportunity for your girl!

Keith, they were looking for a stallion in Kentucky. All of those except for Monashee Mountain are in Florida.

Thanks for the suggestions. We have a Lost Soldier due this spring (Miss Muscles), and have considered going back to him. We'll check out the others.
