Pete,
The foal will be raised to race on dirt...I want a hard knocking, resilliant, and durable racer. No thinking in terms of stakes winner...just good claimers with ancestors with good racing records.
April and March are the seasons for the best babies to be born no matter where you are. Many articles spit out a lot of these stats. and Ohio winters can be nasty in Jan. and Feb.
Your thoughts are taking me some time to research. I'll email you on my thoughts. That Baby League statement has me really searching.
Thanks,
Dave
Breeding a Mare

Hi Dave,
I should have asked where you want to foal the horse and where you would like it to race.
I STRONGLY advise against trying to breed for a specific birth month. You'll find yourself scrambling to get the mare pregnant in June. Literally, you're fooling with Mother Nature and horses are the lowest live birth rate of all domesticated farm animals (about 60%). Wehave cold winters here in NY too but there's no reason that you can't let the youngin' out before the weather breaks.
I don't know the stats you're referring to youbut I am reminded of Mark Twain's comment...
There are LIES, DAMNED LIES and STATISTICS!
Most foals are born in March and April so view the stats with this in mind.
I don't know that the Baby League should have caused such a stir. I think you're looking too much into paper to plan a breeding.
Regards,
Pete
