The market place determines the price of a horse, and the buyers are willing to pay more for "good horses". So, if you're really breeding a good horse, you would be profitable in the sales ring, regardless of whether your original intention is to race or to sell...

My thinking wasThere are a lot easier ways to make money than breeding an Unclaimed 14K mare.

If it were just the money we would never have bred Itsy. would have just retired her to a farm of a partner and that would be that. it going to be hard to make money off a 14K dam. Everyone in the partnership knew it going in.

hi Elusive City

I'm not so sure you might not be in store for a good experience with Itbaya.

For starters...this will be her first foal...and maiden foals are often smaller than one might like to see. Selling a small foal/yearling is not an easy task...and I expect that the chances are greater that she'll have a smaller than average foal (at least on the first go around) than the chances are that she'll have an average or larger foal.

I don't believe that the first foals are smaller. At least that has not been my experienced over the years, and since this mare is, from what I understand, a big girl, I would not even emphasize the size. I think there is a difference between 'big' and 'precocious' ore early mature. Big colts take more time to mature, so buyers who are looking for big are looking in the wrong places. Rather, concentrate on correctness, good racing conformation [depending on racing goals], attitude, etc. I see 'good looks as an indicator of athleticism and not just prettiness. You'll find both of these aspects in Fusiachi Pegasus, lol.

I find it always amazing how little people pay attention to the individual horse and only focus on the pedigree. If we had more genuine access to details on stallions and mares, we might be able to construct better race talent. A race car has both a motor and an exterior form as in form and function.
If you have a very large mare, do not breed her to a large stallion this time would be my suggestion. The dam [+ her background] usually determines the size of the foal with some exceptions, as always.

You probably won't like this guy because he hasn't done too well at prestige auctions, but he appears to be rather popular with people who want to race. He was bred to 113 mares this past season. Anyway, take a look. There are, of course, oodles of other possibilities. Just thought I'd go with MUTAKDDIM for one. He stands alongside some pretty fancy stallions at Hill "n" Dale.

MUTAKDDIM is by Seeking The Gold ex

Jagger---I am very late to find this thread but if you decided to go to Northern Afleet, I think you made an excellent choice. He really upgrades his mares and I absolutely believe his stud fee will double or triple in the very near future.
I hope breeding a medium sized stallion to a taller mare works for both us, I bred my Unbridled Mare (Bridle Wave) to Northern Afleet last breeding season and I am waiting to see what her foal will look like. In general, I am not a fan of breeding smaller to big so I hope it works out well for both of us, I tend to be a "like to like" breeder. I went for Northern Afleet last year because I believe he was a steel at 12,500 and he is an even better deal at 20k this year. In my opinion, if Taylor Made hadn't made such a huge mistake with Our Emblem, NA would have been 40k this year, so you caught a huge break. Hard to believe he is only 20k this year--our good fortune. Good luck on your mating and I hope your mare gets in foal very quickly. The commercial market loves early foals.
best regards Brendan
