Broodmare for Secretariat son

Postby ckay » Fri Jun 02, 2006 10:38 pm

I have a son of Secretariat out of Newchance Lady. He is getting old and I want to find a TB broodmare for a baby for myself. The stallion is very refined and beautiful. I think a stocky mare would be a good choice. What do you think? I know very little about TB lineages and am new to this. Please help. Am looking towards January 2007. It has been suggested that I go to the Barret (SP?) sale. The baby would be for my personal use as a riding horse, and if nice enough for breeding later. Would be nice if I could ride the broodmare too...

Thanks

Well for your personal use as a riding horse.
I would look at horse websites like horsequest.com etc..
Hunt a cheaper TB mare rather than racing breeding stock.
As a breeder for later,I cant really steer you in the right direction.
I think most TB breeders have a dream of having a stallion good enough to
stand at stud.
An only very few get a Great stallion for stud service.
Another problem is that you are hoping for a colt right?
What happen's if you get a filly?
Im not sure I helped you much sorry.
Good Luck in your breeding a foal.

What I meant was that I am not in the racing business. So I am not raising it to sell as a yearing or something like that. I don't neccessarily want a colt, filly would be OK too. I have used this stallion for breeding purposes in the past, but I have a new partner in him and we have not
done anything with him in a long time.
No matter the purpose, I am trying to learn if there are any bloodlines that I should particularly avoid? I intend to spend the next 6 mos learning and shopping until I find the right horse.
So whatever you can tell me will be much appreciated. I have aleady learned a little from reading the posts on this sight and I am quite fascinated.

Thank you again,

I'm going to assume that horse you have is Secretary's Chance.

If you are breeding for a riding horse, conformation is far more important than pedigree. When making breeding selections, it is wise to stay somewhat within the particular horse's phenotype. That means if you have a greyhound type stallion don't use a blocky mare because the resulting foal might be a patchwork quilt.

That said, this must be a venture driven by your heart. Breeding and raising a foal for a riding horse costs exponentially more than just buying a nice sound green 3-4 year old.

No matter... you might look at some of the rescue sites, and there are always lots of horses on equine.com and equinenow.com.

Good luck!

Madyln
Thank you so much for your reply. How did you kno w who the horse was? He is a beautiful, elegant crature and has a good mind. I appreciate your suggestion about not chosing another greyhound type. He was crossed on a quarter horse many years ago in Wyoming and the result was a fine riding horse. But I guess I want to keep a piece of history going and so the reason for the TB.
I rode some dressage years ago and enjoyed it. But know I am leaning towards 3 day. Am not a spring chicken any more, but would like to do some cross country.

thanks again

He's a half to Strike Gold and he's refined? Do you have photos you'd be willing to share because I'd love to see them?

All of my pics are from film. I need to take some new ones with the di, gital. I will try to take some tomorrow. Yes, he looks refined to me, but I am used to my Quarter gelding, 16h, 1250lbs.

I can't wait to see them! I have a really nice mare by Strike Gold. I didn't even know he had a half by Secretariat, so I'm psyched to find out about him.

If you are leaning toward 3-day or cross country, you will want a mare that is substantial, 16.2 or so, with very good bone, balance and conformation. Shouldn't be too hard to find.

I have the pics. Took them this morning. He was lazing around the paddock, not in the mood to show off. But how do I attach them to this post?

You'll need to put the pictures in a web-hosting account like Photobucket (its free) and then copy the address of the photo and paste it here like so

http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/ ... 0_2524.jpg

You can just highlight the address and hit the "url" button and it will post a link to the photo

http://s22.photobucket.com/albums/b340/osallie/New%20Mares/?action=view&current=100_2524.jpg

Note when I copied the first address it linked automatically without pressing "url" so you may try that first.

Having problems getting the photos on photobucket. Not very computer literate I am afraid. If you like I can e-mail...
