Thoughts on this mating

Postby TomFool » Sun Aug 13, 2006 5:41 am

Storm Day with Made in Miami by Silver Hawk. I really think this pedigree fits on paper & I really think these two would create a nice individual. MIM was a nonwinner & has one foal, an 06 colt by a stallion named Distant Mirage. Storm Day has done ok in the sales ring so far for a La horse but his two year olds are starting slow. I dont tend to look at many stallions that were 4 for 20 on the track but his best rag # was 2 which is not super great but I can accecpt it on ability level even though I dont remember much about him when he was running. The 3x3 Storm Bird would worry me a bit on creating a foal or yearling I may dread dealing with everyday & then again it may not. MIM has a bit of a high strung goofy side to her but is not a mean sprited horse at all she is just not that bright to different & or new situations. I am curious as to how inbreeding to Storm Bird has done to this point & just get others general thoughts on this potential mating? Thanks

Tom Fool, I have a very nice stallion standing at the Running R Ranch in Opelousas. His name is MUSTANG JOCK by Wild Again. This was his first year and we bred 41 mares . Everyone that looked at him bred to him. He is very correct. Your mare crosses very good on paper. Pull up his pedigree and you will see a pic of him right off the track. [/b]

Hopefully someone with Goldmine can help to investigate the success of inbreeding with Storm Bird. I would, except I am at work and won't get home until tomorrow late. Generally, although there are some notable successes of inbreeding to any particular stallion (or mare), only one horse has had significant success when inbred, Northern Dancer. He has had close to 1000 horses who have won at least 1 Graded Stakes race. Mr. Prospector, who is 10 years younger but had almost 500 more foals than ND, has only 52 horses who have won at least 1 Graded Stakes race when inbred. With the immense popularity of Mr. P and with the number of mares in the books of today's stallions, this is a very low number.

With a little work and the help of Goldmine, you can almost always come up with a cross that has more statistical/historical success that does not have a 3 x 3 inbreeding.

Storm Bird inbreeding

I could find zero Gr. 1 winners in the Goldmine data base with Storm Bird 5x5 or closer.
