quick question, his stud fee is 6,000.00, how set in stone are the farms on their fees.

in my opinion this horse is overrated,he has produced one real big horse but not much else...

By just about any type of measurement, Slew City Slew is a fantastic bred-to race stallion. His percentage of foals to race, winners to foals, and ratio of AEI to CI all point to a stallion whose foals get to the track and win. His primary deficiencies would be found in the sales ring. Perhaps, as has been pointed out, one could knock him for not having more than a handful of "big" horses.

His fee is actually up to $6,000 this year from $5,000 in years past. He gets big books and while many stallion fees are somewhat negotiable, I truly doubt his would be one of them.

If you are breeding to sell... probably better look elsewhere. If you want to race your foal, he is a fantastic selection.

my intentions are to breed to race. so thats why i considered him. just was wondering what it was going to cost.

I think Slew City Slew is a good value. I have a simply lovely broodmare by him that would have been a stakes mare. She broke her foreleg by slipping on ice between the shedrows at Turfway at the beginning of her race career.

I second SCS as a SUPER value as a race sire! He's not overated at all. You don't get 6 % SW and his % of runners/winners from one fluke horse!

If you are like me, just hoping for a solid low level allowance horse who never has to run for a tag, then he is a great value. Of course, if they turn out to be stakes horse all the better, right! However, no delusions of grandeur that you will win the Kentucky Derby breeding to him.....!

He breeds a lot of mares so they are not hurting to fill his book.

Other stallions who are good race sires and have value in his range are Pioneering, Concerto, and Service Stripe.

It was between SCS and Pioneering for breeding in 2007. Our mare got approved for both stallions but we went with Pioneering. Will probably book to SCS for 2008.

Love Slew City Slew!! Just claimed a 3 yr old filly by him and if we can't move her up by going a route she wil go to the broodmare band. She's out of a Quiet American mare. Hoping age and the longer distance will let her do her best running next year. And......don't forget SCS son Evansville Slew, a good value and the best thing that has come to Oklahoma in years.

Yes! When he was here in KY at Buckpond, a stallion groom on the farm told a friend he was the best looking stud they had ever had. Never got a chance to see him, but I would have love the chance to breed a mare to him. Very jealous!!

I have a weanling filly out of SCS she is a first foal and is just a great specimen. I am really excited about her in the future. The good thing for her is that we have more than enough time to wait on her.

I have always loved SCS, thats one of the reasons why I bought the mare.

To answer the original question, Slew City Slew's fee was raised to $6K for '07, from $5K in '06. I believe this is due to the success of Lava Man, and I do NOT believe, for one moment, they will have a problem filling his book for $6K.

Farms seem to be "firm" on fees they can collect. The only softness, usually, is when they "need" mares.

Actually, he is not a bad commercial stallion for those on a budget. His yearlings sell for 21K and 2yo's for 34K. 3.5 and almost 6 times a return on a 6K fee. Not many of the 100K+ stallions have this return.

jagger You are so right, SCS, is the best value in America whether you're breeding to race or sale. I call him the "Rodney Daingerfield" of the TB industry!!! When you throw a LAVA MAN and a SIS CITY every now and then I think for the money IMO you're at the top!!! His fee should be at least $15K but I'm thankful that it's a reasonable $6K. That only shows there is some sanity left in this game!! I'm one of the little fish in the big pond of TB racing and I am glad there is one "excellent" value stallion out there for us little guys. NEVER, NEVER LOSE THE DREAM!!!!
