If you had a choice, which mare would you be looking at with the intention of breeding in and for the Ontario market with resulting foals as sales projects? Thanks for your help.
1. Aidensfield (1996) by Apalachee out of Knightly Donna
2. Smart Amy (1990) by Smarten out of Indian Holiday

I would take Aidensfield. I love Apalachee, and she is a much younger mare.

Which mare?

Such a problem! :D I love both of those mares. The Apalachee mare has a very nice full sister (as you know) SW OF $551,753 SSI 20.94 & (5) additional females that can continue to improve the family. Just off the top of my head, I would love to try her on Cobra King, (ala "Lunar Sovereign") as that has worked very well.

On the other hand I love Smarten mares as he is a leading cumulative broodmare sire (AEI 1.68 vs CI 1.52). I like the Slew over Smarten angle ala "General Challenge". This mare also appeals to me because she has some real iron horses for siblings (Danbuck 131 starts/$169,373, Lynclar SW 56 starts/$420,098, & Indian Dan SW 31 starts/$229,287, Clairlyn 27 starts/$145,928, etc. A lot of soundness in this family! The negative is, only (2) other female siblings to continue improving the family.

Either one would be a good choice depending on the physical type, speed, distance, temperment, etc. I'd go for the Smarten myself!

In any commercial market, for mares that age their production is the most important factor to consider. It doesn't matter if she's a SW if she's had 10 foals that can't run. Converesly, she can be unraced and a producer and she's fine.

Other factors include size, conformation, soundness history, and then the page.

In my opinion... gotta' agree with Madelyn. Go with Aidensfield.

Thanks for all your replies. We're probably going to end up with both of these mares, as well as another mare named Noda Deh. They are a package deal from someone who is looking to downsize, and luckily, my partner and I have the room. We just have to go have a look at them to finalize plans.
