Pedigree Query

I'm new to the world of TB's (previously a QH girl), and I'm looking at this mare as a possible broodmare prospect. Please give me brutal honesty! I'm really thrown for a loop by the Argentinian blood, and hoping that some of you veterans will help me make some sense of it. Also any recommendations for a possible mating would be appreciated as well! (Also, I would be breeding to sell, not to race myself). Thanks in advance!

I would find another mare.Cold hard reality especially to sell.Even tho' Potrillazo was a leading sire in Argentina in 1992 it is still Argentina.Horsemanship in Argentina rises above pedigree and ability-which is something U.S. trainers and owners could learn a little more about..The dam is a nicely bred mare but anything noticeable doesn't show up until the 3rd dam which will be the 4th dam on a catalog page.The 2nd dam is an honest producer of condition claiming horses.(this is probably why a daughter of Danzig from the family of Indian Skimmer ended up in Argentina)When they reached that 3rd win they lost their best friend which is better than winning that 1st race and losing a best friend but not good enough for the potential to resell on a catalog page.IMHO If I am looking for something to sell,I would try to find something with more of what's called a catalog page under the 1st or 2nd dams.Their out there,Keeneland just sold several for under $2500.And that's with one's cooking in the ovens.Sincerely-Jeff

Come down to the Fasig Tipton sale next month in Lexington and there will be mares, some already in foal, and with more page than this one.

It costs the same to feed and foal a mare whose catalog page has NO appeal as it does to feed one whose page might double or triple the stud fee in the sales ring.

I saw this mare's picture & it was striking -- I like her & I can see why she would attract. But if your goal is breed-to-sell, I think you'll find that a different mare will help you meet your goal better than this mare.

And that's from someone who really likes her & wanted to find a reason to buy her, too!

#452-6 year old daughter of Mister Jolie - selling as a broodmare prospect - as a racehorse she had 3 wins,10 2nds,4 thirds from 2 to 4 earning $77,945 - she received no bid meaning she didn't even get a minimum bid of $1,0000

#455 - 10 year old daughter of Valley Crossing - winner at 3 - dam of 2 foals of racing age,2 starters,1 winner,1 stakes placed earning over $67,000 and both ran in 2006 - has a 2 year old this year by Impeachment - sold open and received no bid

#468 - 18 year old Argentinian mare that was Group 3 Stakes Placed in Argentina and has produced a $225,000 Stakes Winner - she has an upcoming yearling by Tiger Ridge and sold open again for no bid

#509 - 15 year old daughter of Chief's Crown and out of a daughter of Mr. Prospector - she's produced 2 $200,000 plus earners including a Grade 2 Stakes Placed - she has a 2 year old this year by Golden Missle and a yearling by Pleasant Tap - she sold open for $4700

Some in foal mares included:

#516 - 7 year old daughter of Banker's Gold - winner of 4 races earning $61,000 - 1st foal is a yearling by Yonaguska - sold in foal to Sweetsouthernsaint for a late April foal for $3200

#532 - 13 year old daughter of Ogygian and is a 1/2 sister to Mother Goose Gr.1 winner Able Money - mares had 2 winners earning $84,000 - sold in foal to Eltish for $1,000

#597 - 8 year old daughter of Mister Jolie - winner of 4 races - $67,015 and in foal to Sligo Bay for a late March foal for $1600

#624 - 6 year old daughter of Tale Of The Cat in foal for a February foal to Full Mandate for $1700

#681 - 13 year old daughter of Blushing John that was the Champion Imported 2 year old filly in Puerto Rico and also won 2 races in the U.S. earning $94,000 - mares produced 4 foals of racing age,2 winners earning over $77,000 - sold in foal to Graeme Hall for an early February foal for $1700

and my sleeper of the sale mare

#757 - 14 year old daughter of Dawn Quixote - produced 3 foals of racing age,2 winners earning over $175,000 including a Master Bill that equaled the track record for 6 furlongs at Philadelphia Park of 1:07 4/5 - she has a 2 year old and a yearling this year both also by Master Bill - she sold open for $1100

There out there - I look for Fasig-Tipton February to follow suit on buyer's market mares.Hope this helps-Jeff

That's the same picture I saw -- I wanted to see the mare up-close.

BUT I wasn't looking at her to breed & sell -- mares of her stature sell in foal for alarmingly small dollars, as do their weanlings, even yearlings, if they bring any bid at all. In fact, I was looking at her show-horse-producing potential, not commercial race foals. [Although I'd still need to see her in person.] We multi-task around here because sometimes the show babies sell for enough to feed the racing stock for a while.

Anyhow, JCBloodstock gave you really good examples of taking approximately the same money & buying something that on paper, will give you a better likelihood of return-on-investment.

We have 1 or 2 mares we breed commercially for the TB market to help support the ones who we think will give us good race-babies to prove our new stallion [and yes -- the occasional show-baby]. I've gotta say the hard part about the commercial ones is breeding with the goal of meeting the market's tastes, rather than our own. [Actually, the real hardest part is figuring what the commercial market will even want when the foal is ready to be sold!]

Someone, somewhere pointed out that the mistake most folks make when they get into breeding is buying too many mares & going for quantity rather than spending more money on a single quality mare. If you spend all your broodmare budget on a single mare, while you are putting all your eggs in one basket, you are also containing your expenses to fewer animals & giving yourself a chance at more profit.

I don't know if you are thinking about a few mares or a "herd of one" but if you stay in breeding for the commercial TB market, this is one you will be culling in the near future. [Again, that's from someone who finds her fascinating & wants her to find a good home.]

Hi, I was wondering if you decided to go ahead and get this mare. I noticed she is no longer available on the Canter trainer listings and had heard she found a new home. I was also seriously interested in her.

actually, i like this mare... the distaff is a good old Greentree family and the producers of Indiana Skimmer, etc.

2nd dam, Dual Threat, is a twin. Some older studies used to point that twins were better producers. Dual Threat's 1/2 sisters produced champion Indian Skimmer, Missy's Mirage (G1), and Classy Mirage (G1).

Broodmare sire Stalwart's X Factor gene traces tail female to Blue Grail, a daughter of Blue Larkspur.

Sire a legend in Argentina. Horse of the Year & Champion 3yo Colt-1985; Stallion of the Year-1992.

OK.. I'd have to agree that commercially some folks might not see what they want, but I would be delighted to have this mare in my broodmare band.

Oh yes, one last point... Dual Blessing's two other daughters (Capote's Blessing has Allen's Blessing and Diamonds N' Pearls has Diamond Shaker) went on to both be stakes producers. Both horses have pics up at PedigreeOnline here.
