Postby tammysinnett » Fri Feb 02, 2007 6:02 pm

I know I am asking for free help but I am trying to learn .......here we go .....at the Fasig Tipton sale for next weekend if I were to go to purchase a broodmare ....for my stallion to improve and maybe make a half way decent foal what mare would you pick??He is by Mr.Greeley(pictured in avatar). Ok if I were in the 2000 range or lower would there be one there that would enhance him to bring out something or add something to his pedigree?? I am looking at the list I have tried to take each one and hypo with my boy....I have tried to look at each ones produce record and win record.....oh my gosh...then I was so frustrated I went and looked at maybe one that had been bred similar lines to my boy...I came up with Gulley#163by Gulch....she was bred twice to WHYWHYWHY and his sire to is Mr.Greeley....anyone care to step in and guide me ....I am still uncertain if I am going but just in case I want to at least know what I need to be looking at.BEGINNER>>>>>URRRRRRhow much do you think this girl will go for since she is bred to Birdstone???and am I on the right track????

(thankyou to my friend on this forum who gave me some great suggestions I am working on looking at those as we speak.....)

Tammy, let us know your stallion's name, please. And do you plan to race or sell the foal? Are you sure you're ready to buy another broodmare? You need to get the best one possible, preferably a proven producer, since your stallion is untested. You'll want mare conformation that suits your stallion, e.g. complements his faults and adds to his strengths. It sounds like you're planning a lot of Mr. Prospector inbreeding with the names you have mentioned. You may want some more genetic diversity in the mare's ancestry for soundness' sake.

Tammy,
Feel free to visit my website. There are tips and articles to help with breeding. Selecting a mare for a stallion should be done in the same way we select a stallion for a mare. You want to capitolize and reinforce the best he has to offer in his pedigree, to increase your likelihood of getting a good foal. While doing this, you are looking to bring in lines that he may not have for qualities you are seeking that are dominant in those outside lines. Take a look and you can visit the Gallery Of Great Thoroughbreds if you enjoy reading about the greats and how they were bred.

Horses you may consider

Postby Keith » Mon Feb 05, 2007 3:21 pm

Hip #209 Miss Salt Lick by Salt Lake-Net Affect by Scout Leader in foal to Outofthebox

Hip #210 Miss Speed Dial by Is It True-Ring Free by Commemorate in foal to King Of Scat

Hip #341 Basic Instinct by Polish Numbers-Smartenof by Smarten in foal to Seattle Fitz

One of these mares may be affordable and in foal. Just a thought.

I like a lot of the sires on Keith's list.

One thing I would say about Smoke Glacken. We don't know whether you are looking to breed a sprinter or a stayer, Tammysinnet. If you want a stayer, you shouldn't necessarily eliminate Smoke Glacken from your list. Even although he himself doesn't have a mare conduit profile that hits your eye saying 'stayer', it seems to be quite easy to find mares to breed to him that will produce mare conduit profiles that are well balanced in terms of speed and of stamina. His best winner Smoke 'n Frolic is an example, and she was very successful at longer distances. Smoke Glacken hasn't had much success as a broodmare sire yet but he is still relatively young.

Having had a son of Gone West here at the farm, it depends on what kind of runner you are looking for. You stallion's appears to be a fairly short runner, so you need mares that have more stamina.

Look at some older bloodlines. And more times than not you can find better mares that are a better fit for your stallion somewhere other than a sale...

Tammysinnet,

You may also want to look at the werk auction ratings. Many of them can be viewed for free. They have it listed as Kentucky Winter.

Have you checked out Canter?

Postby Keith » Tue Feb 06, 2007 5:16 pm

Hi Tammysinnet,

Have you checked out Canter? There is a Stormy Atlantic mare named Atlantic Affair on Canter Northern Illinois. The mare is stabled in Elgin, Illinois. They are asking $2500 for her. Stormy Atlantic has done very well as a sire and his stud fee keeps going up. There is another mare on Canter Ohio named Ms. Rubirosa by Rubiano-Silky Melody by Stop The Music. They are asking $3000 for her.
