A hypothetical

Postby Maven » Tue Feb 13, 2007 6:42 am

Here's a hypothetical for you...

If you had an exceptionally fast filly who ran her eyes out trying to wire fields setting amazing fractions and often winning the races by 7-9 lengths, would you breed her to a speed stallion and hope you get a real fast yearling/2-year-old sales type or do you breed her to a stallion with a little more stamina and hope to get a foal who can carry its speed for more than a mile?

It would depend on if you were planning on racing or selling this foal. But, IMO, I would breed for more stamina. How is your filly bred?

Her name is Cold Hard Dash. She's by Kiridashi out of Regal Crown by Danzig Connection.

Looking at her pedigree, you would assume there are plenty of stamina influences since her next male influences are Spectacular Bid, Forli and Secretariat, but she was 100% speed ball. It could also have been that she's so hot-headed she would never let them wrangle her in and rate.

Im really tempted to play the cards that were given and breed to a sprinter. There's an abundance of sprint races carded at every track and there is that theory, breed like to like.

Hi, Maven. There are no guarantees in breeding horses. If you get a similarly built stud that either supplements her strengths or complements her weaknesses, you're more likely to get a runner. Probably the only no-no is to breed a speedball to a confirmed stayer, because they are too dissimilar. Also size and shape should be appropriate, not too far afield. And if she's high-strung, you may want a more even-tempered stud.

Most tracks have more sprint races, but higher purses tend to go to the routers. Make a sensible choice and hope for the best. It's your call.

Decision has already been made. She will be going to Marquetry.

She's not the most commercial mare but I wanted a stallion that was built like her, had a ton of speed, was a great breed to race stallion, and who was turning into a good broodmare sire since i'll be keeping the foal if its a filly.

I really like the cross. Im hoping for good things. And if its a colt, it will hopefully look very athletic and be a good candidate for the pinhook crowd since it should have plenty of speed and size.

Also, the mare is a headcase and Marquetry is a complete gentleman.

It also helps I have a great relationship with Stonewall and im getting the stallions at incredibly discounted prices. Really pays to make connections and have loyalty.

Great choice, Maven. :o He can sure put that sprint ability into them! And it sounds like he's compatible otherwise well. I've always loved Marquetry, but haven't bred to him.

I like your choice of Marquetry. I think he is underrated.

Glad also to hear of your relationship with Stonewall... perhaps you are speaking about Ken? Fantastic, honest, intelligent guy... I've always thought a lot of him. In fact, because of him, I find it easy to direct people to at least consider using Stonewall, at least they should get a square story and deal.

Clark has been my go-to guy. Amazing guy who is always looking out for the breeder. Will have no hesitation to suggest an outside stallion if he fits better than anything at Stonewall.

After you breed to Marquetry, you can consider breeding to a middle distance stallion, up to one mile.

I would say your mare's colts would have the speed that they inherited from their dam, as the filly's would have the stamina influence of Marquetry.

I took a quick look at her pedigree, I would breed her to a stallion with strong influences from Bold Ruler, a stallion like Formal Dinner would be excellent. I don't know all the stallions in Canada but if you had a stallion with Bold Ruler (that you liked) I would strongly consider him first, if you can only find BR in one side of the stallions pedigree, I would prefer to see it on the bottom side for your mare. Love her name and she should be a nice broodmare for you. Good luck.

I just happened to read another thread about a stallion in Ontario, Gone Fishin. He has a perfect pedigree for her. I love to inbreed to the bottom side of the stallions pedigree and the bottom side of the dams pedigree.
I don't track this stallion in my system (so I can't give you an opinion based on that data) but as far as pedigree goes---I love his pedigree with you mares pedigree, I don't know what your mare looks like or this stallion for that matter, but he should definitely be worth a look. Hope that helps.
