Thunder Gulch broodmare

Postby countrytk » Sat Mar 31, 2007 11:26 am

I would appreciate suggestions on a stallion choice for My Cats Meow (by Thunder Gulch o/o Cats evil I by tabasco cat) standing in W.V, KY, or PA.
Thanks.

interesting... this mare is inbred to storm bird 3X4, so i'd stay away from any northern dancer line stuff up close.

Her dam has foals by gulch, point given, and mr. greeley.

This filly sold for $15K as a broodmare prospect in 2004.

Has she been bred since then?

If you want a commercial foal, send her to a good 1st year stud like Andromeda's Hero, Star Dabbler, Sir Shackleton or Shaniko. I also really like Mingun!

another interesting idea... her dam is inbred to somethingroyal through sir gaylord and terlinga's sire, secretariat.

Indy Mood is also inbred through secretariat and syrian sea.

Feeling experimental? Bred her to Indy Mood, get a Indiana foaled baby, and race here in the Hoosierland!

Hi CountryTK,

What's your goal with the foal, to sell or race? Please describe her conformation. She sold well as a weanling but it would help if you listed her physical strengths and weaeknesses as well as her size, bone and flesh.

Regards,

Pete
Has a palomino jean that pop up some.
This stallion is DNA ... all foal can be MBNA inrolled.

Horses like their credit cards.

Thunder Gulch broodmare

My Cats Meow is 15.3 h, correct conformationally and balanced, but fairly refined and a bit light in bone. I do consider the commercial market when choosing a stallion but primarly breed to race. I would prefer a stallion in the eastern side of the USA (PA,WV, KY,Ohio, etc) Any suggestions/comments appreciated.

She has no In Reality, which has worked quite well with Thunder Gulch.

Waquoit in MD and Bright Launch in KY might be worth a look. Neither one will get you much of much at the sales but they will get you a runner. Waquoit will get you MD-bred.

Thunder Gulch

When I checked the G1 Goldmine for Thunder Gulch as the broodmare sire, he has had one graded winner, Get Square by Redoute's Choice.

When I checked TG's graded winners, there were 31 listed. 22 of the 31 were inbred in the first 5 generations to either Northern Dancer, Raise a Native or Nashua. There were a couple inbred to Mr. P as well. Of the 9 outcross graded winners sired by TG, 6 were in the 13 grade 3 winners. Only 3 of his grade 1 and 2's were not inbred within 5 generations. My guess is that you should look for a stallion that returns Thunder Gulch's affinities. Almost 50% of his grade 3 winnners were complete outcrosses as opposed to 17% of his grade 1's and 2's.

Mating suggestions

This mare descends from the female family of Mr. Prospector, is by a Mr. Prospector line son and is inbred to Northern Dancer (through Storm Bird). I am unsure how I could use Thunder Gulch's affinities. Would you suggest inbreeding through Mr. P again?

Gilded Time

Postby hpkingjr » Wed Apr 04, 2007 6:12 am

Take a look at Gilded Time. He returns much of the best in your mare, Most of his returns are in the 4th and 5th removes thus reinforcing the deeper line breeding of your mare. That's what I meant when I suggested looking for your mares affinities. To me, I separate nicks and affinities. I'm sure there may be other better matches, but this is what I was referring to in my post. I would not suggest another Mr. P although you may well get opposing thoughts. Take a look at the linebreeding chart below.
