Advice Needed

Postby Gerry » Sun May 13, 2007 2:58 pm

I have decided to bring my race mare All Splashed Up home and try to get her covered quickly this year. She is a small mare about 15h but has a ton of heart and attitude.

Thanks

Other than being small and about 15HH...how would you describe her conformationally etc? Strengths and weaknesses.

I remember the very first time I saw Jade Hunter. I felt like a warning flag flashed before my eyes when I saw his feet. They were small...but that in and of itself didn't stop me in my tracks...it was that they were so VERY narrow.

It's been some time since I've seen him...and maybe a very talented farrier/blacksmith has done some magic. That said...I'd say BEWARE of JH!!!

Respectfully

FOS,

I have not seen Jade Hunter so small feet is certainly something to consider.

Might suggest a fee range as well. I also noticed some of the stallions I would check out are also 16.2 or better. I know that doesnt always set well with breeders that have small mares.

Thanks

Here is her win photo ..not sure if that will help or not with giving you an idea of what she looks like
http://www.norcrestfarm.com/splashwin.JPG

i havent given stud fee a thought but with suggestions I can call farms and see if there are any deals out there.

My 1st thought with JD is that he is a Mr. P and I could leave her home and get Mr. P ...4 of my stallions have him close, so why else would you recommend JD (other than he is a good sire and is getting older so my chances in upcoming years is slim)

Thanks
Gerry

Well, this might be totally out to lunch, but have you thought about Comeonmom? He's one of bcassidy's sleepers on his personal system for evaluating stallions, with a very reasonable stud fee and apparently improves his mares.

Line breeding shows Mahmoud, Native Dancer (not too close up), Teddy, and one of my favorites Count Fleet, with three of the crosses through his daughters.

No Mr. P., Seattle Slew, or Secretariat unless my Sunday sleepy eyed syndrome is kicking in and I missed them.

Comeonmom is in New York somewhere. Of course I know nothing about his conformation or whether he would suit your small mare.

Btw. I love to see Darn that Alarm in your mare's pedigree.

Thanks geowarrior..Comeonmom doesnt stand too far away from me..might be worth a drive this week to check him out. I love to see Hatchet Man in him...and I absolutely love Splashie's pedigree which is why I got her last year but then decided to run her instead...her foal will definitely be a breed to race baby for me.

I have been considering keeping her home and sending her to Ima Personal Flag but being a maiden on steriods would prefer to let someone else handle her (you may have guessed she has one whooper of an attitude when she is home)

Well, as I said bcassidy is a big fan of Comeonmom, and I believe the stud fee is $3000, and he's currently 41 on the New York list.

Clever Trick seems to do well with Northern Dancer, so another one I thought of was Regal Classic. He's more expensive, however, so I wasn't as keen. You do get a better gsv with that one, though. His fee is 10,000 and his height (they don't often quote height) is supposedly 16.2.

Another one which is a bit more risky as he's new is Desert Warrior by Deputy Minister out of a Secretariat mare who's a full sister to Terlingua. You do get your Norther Dancer that way, but first two year olds are just out now and so far he doesn't look very commercial. He's 100 on the New York list, one runner so far who apparently won a little money.

I only looked at New York Stallions btw. Amazing how many of them have Mr. P.

I hope you find something suitable and keep us updated.

I used the G1 goldmine and saw Halory Leigh was from a Jade Hunter/Clever Trick cross. Plus JD is advertised 16.0

I was not aware that you were a stallion owner/handler with Mr. P readily available, sorry. There is also a pedigree you might look at... French Braids.

French Braids is very interesting habitat.

Gerry, if you are considering Regal Classic, who might be a bit big for your mare, have a look at the pedigree of Nothing To Lose.

This is a bit more of a stretch, but if you look at the pedigree of Eye of the Tiger, there is a Cure the Blues son called Rock and Roll standing in New York.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I am not a big fan of Rock and Roll but I love Desert Warrior. We have a yearling filly by Desert Warrior out of a 3/4 sister to Say Florida Sandy who is gorgeous. I will have to look a little harder at him.

I like Regal Classic but having worked with 2 mares by him they can be a little tough and with the mare already being tough I could only imagine what a colt with that cross would be like

I am going to make a few calls today and see what can be had out there.

I appreciate the suggestions.

Habitat--we stand 9 stallions and run the gament on pedigrees with them but its nice to look outside the box for suggestions :-)

Whoa. Wait a minute. On Steroids? The whopper of an attitude means her ovaries probably look like raisins right now. That stuff takes 6-7 months to completely wear off. Take her home, re acclimate her (turn her out with one or two mares and a gelding) and wait. It may be next year before you can breed her successfully. Just a thought.

That was a thought Madelyn but I have found that if you breed a mare coming off the track the first cycle you have a good chance of getting them infoal...after that I agree you had better forget for the year...which is why I have about 10 mares here that werent bred last year :-)

Thanks
Gerry

P.S. Her attitude was just as tough when she had been out of training for nearly a year getting over a bowed tendon
