Stallion Suggestions?

Postby horselover » Wed May 23, 2007 5:49 pm

I want to bring one of my mares to Kentucky next year to bred. She is a Judge TC - Conquistador Cielo. I am looking for a stallion in the $10,000 range. Does anyone know of a good cross with her pedigree?

Judge Amy

As I remember, it was a cold and windy dark February night when she was born. The mare was nervous and edgy. I was hiding in the rafters and watched the entrance of Judge Amy into the world. I will never forget that moment or her. When you described her I knew it had to be your horse.

Actually I went to Judge T C and pulled up his progeny and looked for damsire Conquistador Cielo . She was born in 2000 so she fit as a mare old enough for her first mating. No mystery. This site has lots of info on most of the TB's.

I like a return of In Reality or a son of AP Indy with your mare. The Slew/In Reality nick has worked well together.

A stallion from the Unbridled line would fit well with a Judge T C mare. 2 more strains of the great mare Aspidistra and a sex-balanced addition of In Reality.

What's the reasoning or theory behind inbreeding to a particular horse and being "sex balanced"? Does it apply to only stallions or to both mares and stallions?

Thanks,
Allen

There are many opinions on whether inbreeding is good or bad. The premesis is that it will exagerate the traits - good and bad - of the horse you are inbreeding. I would deem the 2 horses that I mentioned as having traits I would want exagerated in a foal. Many people will say horses like Danzig, Raise a Native, Seeking the Gold who are all great sires bring an unsoundness component that you don't want exagerated.

Additionally 3 things supposedly strengthen inbreeding -sex-balanced, inbredding in the same generation, and inbreeding to great foundation mares.

It means exactly that, sex-balanced. Through a son and a daughter. One line this does NOT work for at all is Northern Dancer. Northern Dancer inbreeding only seems to work through sons.
So Run for the Roses, as fast as you can.....

Sex-balanced would mean that in regards to the horse that is inbred, its offspring in the pedigree are not the same sex. In the mare in question, Judge Amy, Turn-To is sex-balanced thru his son Best Turn and daughter Tammy's Turn. They are both in the same generation and in addition his son Hail to Reason is one more generation removed. Bold Ruler is not - Secretariat, Bold Commander, and Key to the Kingdom are all males.

Thanks to both of you. This is what I thought all along but wanted to hear it from someone more astute at pedigrees and breeding than myself.

Thanks to everyone for taking time out to help! I really appreciate it! I think it was Casper who recommended Unbridled's family. Funny you say that because she has a 2 month old filly out of Be Like Mike. He was the only descend Unbridled in our area. I was thinking along the line of Eavesdropper or Saarland.
