Fertility Rate after C-Section

Postby Supernova » Sun Jun 10, 2007 3:25 pm

Hello,
Does anyone know what the fertility rate of a broodmare is after having a cesarean section preformed? Has anyone had any successful foals out of a mare following surgery? I'm considering a mare who had a cesarean section on her first breeding and aborted the next foal. Both breedings were to the same stallion. Is it possible to have a successful foaling after?

Thanks!
Robyn

It is possible. However there are many risks: to the mare, financial, etc. A cesarean predisposes a mares uterus to metritis and scar tissue. Both can cause serious fertility issues not to mention that it is very costly to treat a mare with metritis in mid to late term gestation (been there, done that). Best of luck!

I'm not sure first hand but from what I've researched it starts at about $5000.00 USD and goes up from there depending on the case.
