Suggestions for Silver Charm Filly?

Postby horsehelper4 » Fri Sep 07, 2007 5:49 am

Thank you for the reply, Her name is Lucy Lovesalot and we breed Virginia breds. Location is possible for any stallion, we are willing to haul her for the right stallion. We would like to use Dynaformer, however not able to this year. In a stud fee range of 15,000 or so.

Our stallion is Magic Ruby and we are not sure if he is the best for Lucy. I am fairly new to breeding the Thoroughbreds and have just recently learned Dosage. Any information would be greatly appreciated on our stallion as well. Kind Regards.

I am interested in conformation, pedigree and a sound mind as well. I have bred only one purebred from my stallion at this point and this foal has shown unbelievable prospect as a weanling, but still would wonder about possibilities for Lucy Lovesalot. Thanks again for any advice.

Take a look at Country Only at Naylee Farm, WV. www.nayleefarm.com or www.arstallions.com.

Thank you for the reply, Country Only is a Handsome, Majestic looking Stallion. I do like his pedigree for my Lucy. Would you please post his 2008 fee or privately email me his fee? I have been offered foal sharing, yet unsure if this is safe. Thanks for your time.

I meant to ask for an opinion on whether or not I should continue to race Lucy Lovesalot. She has not been developed to break her maiden so that she would be worth more as a broodmare. I put her with the wrong trainer at the recent Colonial Downs meet and she was overtrained staying body sore. Robaxin seemed to be her best friend at the meet. I do not understand why some trainers push them rather than develop them. I was discouraged from racing. Carl Natzer said it best in my opinion...."I do not train racehorses, they train me." Because of what Lucy is....the trainer I hired just freaked out over her and compared her to Ruffian. BIG mistake in my opinion. Ruffian was one of my favorite of all time! Lucy favors the Seattle Slew side of her pedigree.

Who was your trainer at Colonial? The robaxin sounds like A. Ferris Allen, I used to work on turning all the pills he gave the horses into powder to be put in their feed. Drove me crazy....................

I like Lucy Lovesalot with Osidy, who is a moderately priced horse ($4k)in Ky who was a pretty good race horse. It will be his second year at stud in '08. Her family shows an affinity for Northern Dancer. She is from the female family of Scat Daddy, one of this year's Derby favorites. A BIG plus of this mating is that you get Nijinsky through Que Belle, plus a chance to double up on My Charmer through Seattle Slew and Seattle Dancer. Osidy is a leggy horse, though, so you might want to peek at the conformation cross as well. Another direction to look at might be a horse like Grindstone at Overbrook.

Regarding continuing to train on, your filly is four? Presumably sound? What has she done to date? Her pedigree, to me anyhow, indicates she might like to try to sprint on a dirt surface. What has her form been like?

WOW, you hit the nail on the head....A. Ferris Allen did train Lucy Lovesalot, and afterwards I was warned about his philosphy. I claimed her from his barn and put her with another just like him evidently. She was with Mark Eagan who came out of New England.

Winds,

You obviously know the deal with the horses, I cannot get over how quick you figured A. Ferris Allen. Blows my mind.....

Madelyn,

I really appreciate your advice and love the choice from what you said. I am looking at stallions and will absolutely check out Osidy further. Which farm in Ky does he stand?

Also, yes Lucy is four and still sound, thank goodness! She was started as a 3 year old, was bred in Kentucky and sent to Laurel. Finished 3rd her first race in a Maiden Claiming 25,000. She was 5-0-0-3.

She was working at Colonial fairly slow for her, at 4 furlongs in 50.00, I have gotten faster times on her. This was not the fastest, but not the slowest on the works for that track. Colonial is a mile and a half track I believe. She is a big bodied mare who favors more of the Seattle Slew side of her pedigree.

I have put nearly everything I have into gathering breedstock over the last nine years and was trying Lucy as my first at the track.

I am all about the horse! I just wanted her to break her Maiden for a better broodmare. In my opinion she absolutely has potential, but I cannot afford the right trainer more than likely. I am at the end of my finance until I sell at sale.

Please let me know where Osidy is? Thanks again!!

Osidy is at Spendthrift Farm in the Lexington area. He is in the stallion register.

There's a Seeking The Gold stallion at Godstone in PA that would give you a 4S X 4D to Buckpasser. His name is Special Times and his first two 2 YO's race last weekend.

Also visit NayLee in Summet Point WV as they have a barn full of stallions you may want to consider. One, Civilisation, is by Gone West and out of the blue hen Toussaud.

Thank you Madelyn and Griff,

I think you both have given me really good suggestions. It is nice to have other opinions I feel like.

I am in Gloucester. Va. and WV or PA are not far to travel. Even KY would be okay as I have considered moving there. Land is more affordable and I have been looking for more land for over a year.

I am going to contact Naylee Farm on Monday, have looked at their stallion Country Only. I would rather have a stallion that has had more foal crops, but this boy would work with my Lucy and she would benefit him as well. I look for quality mares to go with newer stallions on my breeding program as well.

A great day to you!
