locating retired tbreds

is there some mechanism/system to locate horses that have retired, specifically mares? i've located several ex-racing mares that i'm interested in for broodmares but i don't know how to get contact info for the owners or identify the current owner. suggestions?

If you know what state the mare was foaled in, you might try contacting that state's association. They should have a list of owners/breeders.
