mating advice on our Girls

Postby JDufort » Tue Jan 15, 2008 6:24 pm

Hey guys,

We have four mares going to the shed this year, we already have one breeding lined up, as we won a season to Castledale (at Crestwood). Our mare "Whisper inthesand" will most likely have that date. We have a few ideas on the other girls, but thought I'd get some more opinions. We are breeding both to be comercial and race. We want these guys to be useful, sound horses as well as have some comercial value.

1) "Miss Muscles" (Vanlandingham X Devinette by secretariat)
*has 6 of racing age, 6 to race, 5 winners and comes from a VERY nice, active family. has a 4 yr old filly who made her last start in a stakes race, but suffered a career ending injury turning for home.

2) "Van Van" (Vanlandingham X Pomade by Prince John)
*has 5 winners, and a VERY promising 2 yr old by Double Honor that we have in training. Also comes from a very nice family. Has a yearling by Powerscourt and we have considered going back to him.

3) "Gold Coast Kris" (Kris S. X Merry Graustark by Graustark)
*winning mare, has two winners, and a nice big yearling by a storm cat son. In foal to Leroidesanimaux for an early baby. May go back to him. She has the lmost lacking page, but is a nice, big, correct mare with a running family (that sadly lacks blacktype). full sister to three winners.

Thanks in advance

Johanna

Send Gold Coast Kris to Out of Place at Claiborne. Talk about a hot cross...he's seen quite a few Kris S mares and has this habit of getting nice horses from them.

Seriously--he has something like 35 foals out of Kris S mares, at least 12 of which made more than $50k on the track and a few stakes winners including on Gr-3. All on a $7500 fee. And when they're done racing, the Cox's Ridge types also are well-regarded by the sporthorse folks. Out of Place isn't the most commercial of stallions, but if you have a nice foal bred on a proven cross, it will attract some attention.

There have been two graded winners out of Vanlandingham mares, Five Star Day and Lil's Lad. 5 Star is by Carson City(Mr. P0 and Lil's Lad was by Pine Bluff(Danzig). Both combined Northern Dancer and Mr. Prospector. Given that premise there are many that fit.

I like State City with her. Kela, Canadian Frontier and E. Dubai are also considerations. Sons of Danzig fit well. Vanlandingham was generally a disappointment in the shed so I don't know if his small sample of stakes winners is valid.

Breeding your mares

For Miss Muscles I would consider

Don't Get Mad by Stephen Got Even-Class On Class by Jolie's Halo standing for $3,000 at Spendthrift. He won the Derby Trial S., Indiana Derby, and the Northern Dancer Breeder's Cup S.

On this cross you would get
3x4 Cox's Ridge
3x5 Secretariat

For Van Van I would consider

Strategic Mission by Mr. Prospector-Sultry Sun by Buckfinder standing for $7500 at Gainesway and the sire of Showing Up. Strategic Mission is a half brother to Sultry Song who is by Cox's Ridge.

On this cross you would get
5x5 Count Fleet
4x5 Princequillo

For Gold Coast Kris I would consider Danzig bloodlines when you consider War Chant by Danzig and Ivan Denisovich by Danehill both out of Kris S. mares. I would even consider Storm Cat or El Prado bloodlines.
Stallions you may consider

Bellamy Road $10,000 at Hurricane Hall
Artie Schiller $15,000 at Hurricane Hall
Good Reward $15,000 at Three Chimneys
Grand Reward $12,500 at Hill 'n' Dale
Belong To Me $12,500 at Lane's End
