Pedigree Query

At some point we are thinking about breeding one of our race mares. She's been a nice horse for us. Lots of heart and lots of try. The plan would be to breed her to something with longevity as well (obviously) as performance. While there are a few nice stallions we lik to have horses by, it doesn't really mean that it would make a nice cross. Two inparticular are Beau Genius (we've owned several that ran for a long time and were tough runners) and Hubby really likes Lite the Fuse.
Since any breeding I've personally done has been for sporthorse purposes, I don't know how to nick for racing. We would keep and run this baby ourselves (all our horses run off our farm) so commercial value isn't really a concern to us. The mare's name is "Tipping" and she is in the database. This would be an '09 breeding if we decide to do it. Any suggestion on who would be a good cross for this mare? Ideally (as well) we wouldn't want to send her across country. She tend to drop weight with stress and we'd like to keep her close to home so as not to stress her during shipping.

I do have another mare that I'm looking for hypothetical commercial crosses for. We'd like to breed this mare someday (on a lease) if things work out....it would be great to have two foals together at the same time. But this one would be prepped for a sale. So any suggestions for her would be great. Her name is "Fast and Fluid."

Hi Jenarby,

Seems that you have a pair of nice race fillies to breed. I don't know that it makes any sense to consider potential matings for Fast and Fluid if she's not to be bred this year. The commercial market changes quickly and if you will be breeding her to sell the foal then old opinions will be just that.

Tipping is a better fit with Lite The Fuse rather than Beau Genius who would give you a foal 3x4 Viceregal (Vice Regent's better racing and lesser siring full brother).

You don't give any information of their conformation. Tipping was a sprinter as was Lite the Fuse. Even so I would check back later in the year for Tipping too if she's going to bred in '09.

Actually, Beau Genius has done rather well when doubling up on Vice Regal and Vice Regent. He has at least 3 SW and one stakes producing mare bred on that cross.

The Beau Genius SWs you mention are all with mares carrying Vice Regent not Viceregal and though they were full brothers they were as different as day and night, both at stud and on the track. It's not the same cross.

I don't assume that the brothers are interchangeable in a pedigree and when advising someone on a breed to race I won't gratuitously inbreed, especially 4x3 to a sire that was largely a failure in North America.

Also, Beau Genius is still in California (last I knew) so that's a long haul according to Jenarby.

I am definitely a rookie when it comes to breeding for racing....so I stupidly didn't think about how the trends may change for next year's more commercial crosses.

I guess as a family we've always loved Beau Genius. We've had three of them in our barn....."Boy Genius," "Frazee's Folly," and also "Beaugar."
All three were tough running boys. We still have Folly, he is now 11 years old and still has it in him.

But yes, I think our mare would not handle the cross country trip well so he's out.

If you can think of any other stallions that would cross well with Tipping I'd appreciate any insight. Idealy we'll probably foal her out in PA. Being so close to Presque Isle with obcenely high pots having a PA bred seems like a good thing.

I the Presque pots may not be as obscene this year as last but they still should be naughty nice. I think you have a good plan.
