Should I ?

Postby zinn21 » Tue Feb 05, 2008 7:08 am

I've been offered the below mare at no charge. She is not in foal; in good shape; sound for breeding and not under lights. I don't need another horse but.. What would you do? Does a resulting foal have any market value? I don't think so..

Can she realistically get in foal and stay in foal? I know you said she is breeding sound, but there can be a wide range of what that really means.

When you say "market value" what do you mean? Do you mean Book 1 at KEE Sept? Or, a horse that could sell okay at a regional sale?

I am assuming this is for the CA market? And, to be honest, I am not very familiar with that market. But, she's a multiple stakes winner of over $100k and a good producer - she's had one foal that earned over $100k and another that came pretty close.

I like her and if she were offered to me and I had the room and a plan for retiring her in the next couple of years, I would be interested in her as a breed to race mare.

I don't think so, either - I'd characterize her as more interesting than marketable. Her German dam lines aren't going to draw much interest in the current sprint-dominated commercial market.

I'm not saying she has no value because I think if bred carefully, she does. But I also think the resulting foal will have no commercial appeal, no matter how carefully you match mare to sire.

[So take her & breed to race! ]

She looks very good to me, from a breed to race standpoint. If you are interested in breeding her to my stallion (Thisnearlywasmine), PM me and I will give you a great discount. Regardless, I like the mare's racing performance & breeding.

I decided to pass on her. Just thought there was too much downside and not an expense I wished to take on at this time.

Appy, I visited your stud a few years back. What a classy guy he is.
