Help with breeding a commercial NY Bred

Postby Gerry » Fri Feb 08, 2008 2:03 pm

I just acquired the mare ZZ One (River Special-Jazzy One by Horatius) and am looking for a sales baby. I am seriously considering Chief Seattle, Smooth Jazz and Griffinite. Or I can stay home and breed her to Jelly Roll Romp for the Blushing Groom which has crossed very well with her dam but wouldnt be as commercial. I am open to all suggestions.

The other mare that I cannot figure out is Carousel Corner (Wild Again - Carousel Baby by Verbatim) her dam is a 1/2 to Deputy Minister so if I get lucky could have a very nice runner. Willing to go either race to breed or sell with her. Especially if she produces a filly.

Thanks :-)

You know I always like your mares & there's always a piece of me that wants to say, "Hey. How about Mayakovsky?" And that wouldn't be the worst cross with ZZ One. But not the best or most commercial, either.

Her family in general seem to like Bold Reasoning [who is one of their own] & Turn-To. And Never Bend stallions sometimes cross particularly well with mares who have Never Bend daughters in their pedigree. BUT those are generalities.

Looking more specifically at ZZ One's blacktype half sibs & the stallions you listed, I'd look at Smooth Jazz, knowing you want a baby that might make a profit at a sale and also might make you breeders' money later on. His dam's sire is Blushing Groom, who works so well with ZZ One's family, and his offspring seem to average modestly more than the stud fee. Since you will have the cost of raising the foal, but won't be boarding out, your costs will hopefully be below average and with ZZ One's page, you could make a profit at sale.

Of course, if there were a Cherokee Run or Yonaguska son in the neighborhood, that's be my first choice for a commercial offspring.

And if you hadn't specified 'commercial' my first choice would have been Jelly Roll Romp, if he matched on conformation, because I think he is a great cross, on paper.

As for Carousel Corner - since her dam is half to Deputy Minister, you could look for either a son or grandson of Deputy Minister. But I'd look to a stallion whose dam is by Deputy Minister. In this case, I'd look in PA at Request For Parole - He's by Judge T.C. who should still be remembered fondly in NY & out of a Deputy Minister mare, making the foal 3 x 4 to Mint Copy. Then again, I'm biased because I've always been a fan of Request For Parole's grandpa, Judge Smells, who is remembered fondly by PA breeders who've been around a while.

If you want to stay in NY, my next choice is Talk Is Money [$5000 advertised fee] by Deputy Minister. With him, you may be able to have your cake & eat it, too. He is on the bubble, but at the moment, his colts average about $20,000 as yearlings & 2 y.o.s, so if you get a colt, you sell. His fillies go for less, but you were talking about keeping this mare's filly, any way. And with him you can foal the baby at home & get the NY breeders' money. The other NY-based son of Deputy Minister is Desert Warrior, whose offspring aren't doing quite as well at the sales.

Good luck, whatever you choose.

Thanks :-) I am so tempted to breed ZZ One to Jelly Roll Romp and I think I already have a buyer for the foal if I did that but I like to breed a few each year to sell commercially.

And yes I keep looking for who should go to Mayakovsky I just havent decided yet

Thank you for the suggestions with Carousel Corner..honestly I hadnt thought of going back to Deputy Minister at all. That takes me in a whole new direction...I love Desert Warrior although not super commercial I like what he is throwing, and would love to get a filly.

Depends on how you define 'commercial' because I think if you've already got a buyer at a profit, go to Jelly Roll Romp! There are no guarantees any of your other choices will be commercial, but this looks pretty positive.

Well since this discussion is just between us  ZZ One is going to Jelly. The foal will be sold to a racing home as at weaning, probably not at a price that is really commercial but profitable and I dont have to worry about any outside costs.

Now to just decide what to do with CC. And then that breeding to Mayakovsky.
