Inbreeding on Hoist the Flag

Postby KamiBrooks » Mon Feb 11, 2008 2:24 pm

Okay, I've been trying to search for threads on Hoist the Flag with no luck. Are there any opinions on close inbreeding 3x3 or 3x4 on Hoist the Flag? Any information about temperment or insights about confirmation? I've read his history and about the breakdowns. Do you think this would produce a fragile horse even though some seem to think Hoist the Flag is an asset to jumper lines?

Any input would be appreciated

Thank
Kami

Sorry but I don't like it!! The temperament is a big issue to me when you breed HTF so close. JMO

I agree, I have never had a soundness problem with HTF's. I have lost a lot of blood and have scars as tribute to the bad attitudes of HTF and Ribot studs. I have never seen a kind one.

I had a very nicely bred HTF mare - we had her as a racehorse, she was injured in a race then her owner retired to breed, got one foal out of her, next one died a few days after it was born, then he got scick of her and gave her to us just to be rid of her. She was a neurotic whackjob from the day we claimed her.... walked the stall regularly and colicked every other time you looked at her. I lost her to a severe colic 7 weeks prior to her foaling date with a Chief Honcho foal.

But yeah... she was no walking advertisement for the temperament of the HTF kids.

Pedquery shows 113 3x3 HTF in the db. 16 were blacktype.

I cant answer the inbreeding question but as for temperment, we had the sweetest son of Tom Rolfe named Full Quiver and his foals all had his temperment...extremely sweet and easy to work around. When I was a teenager my parents had a stallion named Swift Goose who was a son of Ragusa and he also was so sweet, I would ride him bareback in the pasture full of mares. Guess we just got lucky and the Ribot meanness skipped us?

According to G1 Goldmine, there have been 9 group/graded stakes winners (4 G1) inbred to Hoist the Flag in the last 20 years or so. I haven't had any personal experience with horses bred this way, so I can't comment on temperament.

Wow, I'm suprised at the responses. I have a Stalwart mare and I think she's actually TOO laid back to be a thoroughbred. She is by far the nicest, most respectful mare on the farm (even among arabs and draft crosses).

Hoist The Flag Inbreeding

Postby hpkingjr » Tue Feb 12, 2008 2:01 am

When I checked this data base, I found 267 horses inbred 5x5 or closer to HTF. There were 35 stakes horses or about a 14% strike rate (no that's not how many grooms that were savaged). Temperment aside they appear to be able to run. Would the inbreeding be sex balanced?

What is the mare's name?

Sorry took so long to reply. Yes, its sex balanced Stalwart mare and Raclette from the sire. The foal is due any time now, so I guess we'll see if he/she comes out savaging everything in sight or not. The dam continues to be completely docile and sweet (well, as long as I leave her udder alone).
