Help! New Guy

I am new to Thoroughbreds and would like your thoughts on sires or sire lines that might work with my mare Know Nu Lady.My goal would be to breed to race but I would retain a filly for eventual breeding.

The first advice I would give is to sell the mare you have and look for a new one with a pedigree that will give you a chance of getting a runner!! But, before you buy another one, subscribe to either the Blood Horse or the Thoroughbred Times and read it cover to cover for about a year and then go buy you a mare that has a chance to get you a runner. By then you will know a heck of a lot more about bloodlines, nicks, and racing than you know today. Right now you are on the path of losing a bunch of money with nothing to show but a couple of hungry mouths to feed every day!!!

With all that said, it is the BEST game in town, if you're willing to be patient and study.

Don't sugarcoat it, larry. Tell it like it really is!

Larry's not wrong, though. It is hard enough to raise a winner. It's a lot easier to start with a producing family. When I first got into TBs, I would say to people, "Look, she's got Blue Larkspur in her pedigree. He won the Derby" Yeah, in 1929! Those genes are long bred out.

Perry Cotton, a really good horseman from Pleasanton, once told me that I should sell all six of my horses and buy one good horse, or go in partners with someone to get one really good horse. I told him he was absolutely right, I knew it was good advice, but there was no way I was going to take it! The next day he felt so bad about telling me my horses weren't worth anything, he made a special trip to drive over to the farm to apologize. He wasn't wrong, but the world could use more Perry Cottons.

Welcome to the board and welcome to the game! Full of heart break and tons of money down the drain (HA). On the upside - there is nothing like it! Watching your mares, caring for them, picking out a stallion and waiting for the end result of your planning. Good luck with your mare! And reading the BH and the TT is a great idea. Also, go to the sales and see what you like about the sires you are interested in breeding to. Also, it is a great place to meet people in the business. I've met some very good friends through this board that have given me valuable information - some I have taken and some I haven't - but I appreciate all the information given to me over the years. This is a great place to start your endeavors.

I certainly wouldn't recommend breeding this mare as a beginner, but in the hands of a skilled breeder with resources, she's got some very interesting bloodlines to play with.

I can't remember ever seeing Noble Lord in a pedigree. Lalun that close makes me smile.

majxmom, Perry was the greatest. I don't think there has ever been a little guy in NorCal who was as successful as Perry was breeding and racing his own horses.

Just recently went in and updated Bobby's Bobcat to make sure folks knew that was Perry's mare and babies.

You will glean a lot of information from this board,we have all kinds here,lots of experience.You may not like some remarks made but most people on here tell it like it is.That is one reason I am so addicted to this place.
To me breeding is a craps shoot,you never know what you are going to get,some great horses would never have been bred if we wanted to know the ins and outs of every little detail about breeding.I guess I am just a dreamer,and if you can't do that, what else is there left in this game.
